Spotlight on Learning

Stage 1

1/2I has been energetically participating in a variety of work and learning so far this term.

1/2I have created a number of different writing pieces, from narrative writing to recounting our wonderful Science Day to creative poems with Mrs Craig.

Calmsley Hill City Farm excursion

Our Kindergarten students had an amazing time on their recent trip to Calmsley Hill City Farm! The day was packed with fun and hands-on learning. The students had the chance to milk cows, take an exciting tractor ride around the farm and animal patting. Exploring the vibrant vegetable garden and spotting three stunning peacocks added to the excitement. These activities helped them connect with farm life in a way that was both educational and enjoyable. They also loved watching the exciting whip show and the farming shows. It was a fantastic day filled with laughter, learning, and unforgettable memories!

Stage 2

Stage 2 have been learning living things have life cycles. They described and compared life cycles of different animals and plants. They explored an aspect of the life cycle of a flowering plant through an experiment. Students have learnt what living things need to survive. They explored how humans can use the environment in survival situations and they conducted a water-filter experiment using natural features of the environment. They investigated the special relationship between flowers and bees, exploring how bees are crucial for the survival of various other living organisms.

They children loved having the eggs and watching them hatch from Living Eggs.  Children from all classes have been enjoying presenting their science projects during class time.

Exciting Discoveries on Science Day!

Our recent Science Day was a fantastic celebration of curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning. Students enthusiastically moved as classes around the school, exploring a variety of engaging science activities that sparked their imaginations and deepened their understanding of the world and the science concepts around them. Adding to the excitement, many students came dressed as their favourite scientists too!

Students watched the explosive reaction of Mentos in Coke, coded on the computers, and created glow-in-the-dark Oobleck that fascinated everyone with its unusual properties. Magnetic forces came to life as students experimented with magnets and iron filings. A highlight of the day was the modelled science experiments featuring liquid nitrogen, which captivated students with its dramatic effects and opened discussions about states of matter and extreme temperatures.

Everyone was also eagerly anticipating the arrival of the chickens. Although the chicks did not hatch on the day itself, they arrived later in the week, much to the delight of the students. Classes visited the science room to meet the new arrivals, making the experience even more memorable.

In addition to the activities at school, students were encouraged to create their own science projects at home and brought them in to be displayed.

PASS High School Sports Program

This term, our Stage 3 students are taking part in a High School Sports Program, led by Year 10 students from Carlingford High School. These senior students have been specially trained to coach a range of sports as part of one of their subjects, Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS), offering our students expert guidance and support.

The program gives our students the chance to develop their skills in sports such as soccer, Oz tag, tee ball, basketball, netball, futsal, and speedaway. It also provides a valuable opportunity for them to experience a taste of high school life and build connections with peers.

After several delays due to rain and ground closures, we finally held our first session in Week 7. Students had a fun time and are excited about the upcoming sessions, eager to improve their confidence and abilities in their chosen sports.

We look forward to seeing our students continue to enjoy and benefit from this fantastic initiative!
