Year 5/6

Year 5/6 Cluster News
HOME INQUIRY:
Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.
Mathematics: Students are to work on the recall of any facts that they are not automatic in recalling. You may like to create flash cards or skip count aloud with your child to help support their learning with this.
Remembering we are aiming to have learnt all our multiplication facts up to x12 by the end of the year. If your child can recall all of them, they can switch over to their division facts.
Inquiry: We are incredibly proud of our Year 5 students for their presentations during the Celebration of Learning evening. This week, they are taking time to reflect on their journey and experiences throughout the process. We encourage you to continue these conversations at home—discussing what went well and what they might do differently if given the chance to do it again.
EXHIBITION: Students have begun their final plan leading up to exhibition next week. This plan, along with a prioritised plan for what to do next, is due to be uploaded to Toddle by Friday, at noon. It is expected that most students will actually complete these plans in class. Students will complete their seventh journal this week. It is due to be uploaded in Toddle by 5pm Sunday. Students still have the opportunity to engage with a primary source who is an expert in their area.
Year 6 Graduation: We would like to share a photo gallery of the graduating class on graduation night. We need 2 photos of your child to show how they have grown up into the students we know today. These photos can be emailed to Mrs Zadow (Zadow.jayne@goldengrove.sa.edu.au). Please include a baby photo and first day of school photo. We are on a countdown and currently have 5 people who have sent photos. Congrats to them! Please have these in by the end of Term 3.
Special Persons Afternoon
Invitations for SPA (Special Person’s afternoon) should have arrived home.
There is a parent form attached. This is to give permission for your child to leave early with their special person. Unless these are returned, they will not be allowed to leave until the end of the day.
Current and Upcoming Learning
Reader’s Workshop: Students will be using Reader’s Workshop as an opportunity to read different texts that will inform their understanding of their chosen area in inquiry as well as foster their love of reading.
Writer’s Workshop: Year 5 students will spend time refining their writing skills.
Year 6 students are reading and writing related to their exhibition research.
Mathematics: Students have continued to identify the features of 3D objects which include the number of faces, vertices and edges. They will be using their spatial awareness to create nets, so that they can build their own 3D objects.
Inquiry:
Year 5: This week, students will reflect on their learning journey and their Celebration of Learning. They will consider what went well and what they might do differently next time. As part of this reflection, they will create a video that can be used to support their exhibition journey in 2026.
Exhibition: This week we are completing our research and are working through their plans to complete their presentations. At home, students will continue to research and benefit from conversations about their inquiry, discussions relating to experiences and posing of questions. Students will be preparing their work for printing. They will be putting up their displays on Tuesday morning and presenting to the school community on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Please note that Exhibition Night will be Wednesday, September 10th from 6.30pm. We have a slightly later time to be mindful of parents who have work commitments. The students are to be congratulated for the hard work they are doing and their positive attitude!
Got Odd Socks? 5/6FZ Needs Them! If you have any odd socks lying around at home, we’d love to take them off your hands! One of our students in 5/6FZ has a creative project in mind and is looking to repurpose them. Please consider donating any clean, mismatched socks to our classroom. Thank you for your support!
