Green Team Gardening Update

On Friday, the Green Team gathered in Brendan’s Garden to check on the garden beds after the fertilising and mulching we completed last term. It was wonderful to see how well the garden had responded — there were very few weeds, and the mulch had settled beautifully, helping to keep the soil moist and ready for the busy spring planting season.

The students worked in two groups to plant the tiered garden beds with a range of fresh herbs, including Italian parsley, curly leaf parsley, basil, coriander, and rosemary. Next, it was time to plant the cos lettuce seedlings. Once again, teamwork was on display as the groups filled two garden beds with the new seedlings.

After planting, the team discussed the importance of using liquid fertiliser to support healthy plant growth. Together, they decided to conduct an experiment to find out whether seedlings watered weekly with liquid fertiliser grow faster than those given only plain water. We look forward to sharing the results of this investigation in the coming weeks.

To finish the session, students harvested the final crop of snap peas and cleared the old bushes. Some couldn’t resist tasting the freshly picked peas — and agreed they were the sweetest and most delicious they had ever eaten!

Adding to the beauty of the garden, the iris bulbs planted last year are now in full bloom, providing a lovely splash of colour around the fruit trees and making the garden even more inviting. The photos below show the students hard at work as well as the beautiful iris flowers brightening Brendan’s Garden.
