R U OK? Day – Checking in with Each Other

On Thursday, 11 September, we recognise R U OK? Day, a national reminder that we all have a role to play in looking out for one another. Sometimes the simplest act of asking, “Are you OK?” can open the door to an important conversation.

At St Monica’s College, this message connects strongly with both our Restorative Practices approach and our Badano lessons, which are centred around the idea of checking in and building meaningful relationships with one another. We understand that students learn best when they feel supported and connected, and that care can be shown through listening, empathy, and being there for one another. R U OK? Day gives us the chance to put this into practice, not just with students, but also between staff and colleagues.

R U OK? Day can also be a reminder of the importance of open conversations at home. Checking-in with your child can make a difference. You do not need to have all the answers, being present and ready to listen, is enough.

A few tips that can help at home:

  • Choose the right time and place. Find a calm moment when you can both focus

  • Entourage follow up questions. Start with “Are you OK?” and gently follow up with questions like “How are things going for you at school?” or “What has been on your mind lately?”

  • Listen to understand. Allowing your child talk and express their feelings can help the, feel heard and supported

  • Encourage help-seeking. If they are struggling, remind them it is OK to talk to the College Counsellor, Year Level Leader or one of their teachers.

These small steps can help create the safety and trust that encourage young people to share what is really going on for them.
