Building Active Participation in Every Classroom

At Carnegie Primary School, we are focused on building classrooms where every student is actively involved in their learning. Educational research highlights that when students have frequent opportunities to participate and respond, they remain more engaged, develop stronger understanding, and achieve more consistent learning outcomes.

To support this, teachers are using a set of consistent routines across the school to make sure every student has the chance to take part:

  • Mini whiteboards – enabling every child to show their thinking and understanding at the same time.
  • Think–Pair–Share – giving students structured time to first think individually, then discuss and explain their ideas with a partner.
  • Choral response – encouraging the whole class to respond together, keeping participation inclusive and energetic.

These approaches ensure that learning is not limited to a few voices, but that all students have regular opportunities to contribute. By making participation the norm, we’re building classrooms where students are more focused, less likely to drift off task, and more successful in their learning.

We’re excited by the progress so far and look forward to continuing to strengthen student engagement across the school.
