Growing Independence: Year 5 & 6 Camp
This week, our Year 5 and Year 6 students are heading off to camp—an exciting milestone in their primary school journey. Camps provide far more than just fun and adventure; they are a valuable opportunity for students to grow in independence, resilience, and confidence.
As children move through the upper primary years, it becomes increasingly important to gradually release parental control in a safe and supportive way. Experiences like camp allow students to step slightly outside their comfort zones, take on new responsibilities, and begin making decisions for themselves. These “safe risks” are essential in helping young people develop into healthy, capable adults who can think critically and navigate challenges with confidence.
While children are still young, the adults in their lives play a vital role in guiding their choices and creating opportunities for growth. It is through this balance—providing support while also allowing increasing independence—that children learn and mature. If we shield them too much from discomfort or challenge, we can unintentionally limit their development and make it harder for them to cope with more significant adversity later in life.
The primary school years are the perfect time to encourage children to get involved in a wide range of activities. Even if something is not their favourite at first, participation helps them build resilience, discover new interests, and develop important social and problem-solving skills.
We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the dedicated staff and volunteers who make opportunities like camp possible. Their willingness to give their time, energy, and care—often leaving their own families—ensures our students can enjoy these rich and memorable experiences.
We also acknowledge and thank the staff remaining at school, who take on additional responsibilities in the absence of the camp team. Your support ensures the continued smooth running of our school during this time.
We wish our Year 5 and Year 6 students a fantastic camp experience and look forward to hearing about their adventures when they return!
