CERES Excursion

1/2B, C and E went to CERES to learn about Zero Waste. Straight away, we dived into the

5 R’s: Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Recycle, and Rot!

We went on a nature walk picking up litter with tongs, explored how worm composting works, and had a scavenger hunt for composting bugs like millipedes. Students discovered surprising things that can be recycled into paper— like cotton jeans and even kangaroo poo— before making our own recycled paper (with recycled paper). It was a fun, hands-on day learning how to turn waste into something useful!

12A, D and F visited CERES on Thursday to learn all about Farming for our Future. One of the three sessions explored images of the huge range of what farming entails before venturing into the farming areas of CERES, searching for carrots, fennel, potatoes, capsicums and varieties of lettuce. Students loved watching the beehives through glass panels, feeding chickens and considering how farming impacts their lives.

A second session incorporated all our senses as we had the chance to eat some Saltbush leaves, smell Lemongrass Myrtle and look at varieties of fungi. We used our whole bodies to act out the process of mushrooms spreading spores, and a strawberry's life cycle. Students made their own seedling pots from recycled newspapers, filled with soil and seeds to grow at home.

A highlight for many students was holding and watching worms wriggling in their wet hands, before naming them and saying goodbye, letting them continue enriching the soil. Many interesting creatures and farming features were found on our scavenger hunt, where we used a specific and fancy gardening tool, a spoon, to search for minibeasts in some garden beds.

Tier 2 Maths - Counting and Place Value

Over the last three weeks, we have intensively targeted students' Counting and Place Value skills in our Tier 2 Maths. Groups were formed based on assessment, which allowed us to identify the next areas of learning for each individual. Counting was approached in many different ways, with students learning to count forwards and backwards from different starting numbers, and by different values. The place value of numbers was expanded, written and represented in multiple ways with hands-on opportunities used throughout these sessions.

We are proud to celebrate our students' improvement in Maths, as well as their self-confidence, through this highly successful and engaging part of our learning! Students are excited for the next Tier 2 Maths period, which will focus on Addition and Subtraction strategies, in Term 3!
