CAREERS NEWS

Seeing Mothers as Career Inspirations

A common saying heard is “if you can see it, you can be it”. This makes the achievement of many of the women who have gone before us, all the more inspiring, as these often had to be the people to break glass ceilings, challenge societal norms whilst raising children and sometimes  dealing with judgement from media and sadly, some family and friends.

Mothers have been teaching their children soft skills way before it became a part of the education vernacular. Encouraging young people to say hello to adults, answer the phone politely, make eye contact when someone is talking to you are all things we now teach as employability skill, but has been the domain of many women and mothers for centuries.

Mothers have always encouraged their children to understand that rights go hand in hand with responsibilities. The injustices that our mothers once stood up against are now highlighted and are embedded in Career Education when we look at employee rights and responsibilities.

When we hear ill-informed people saying that they are unaware of the role women have had in technology, we need to remember that Ada Lovelace is considered the first computer programmer, not woman programmer, first computer programmer.

So in time, after  Mother’s Day, let us remember that while not all Mothers have had a choice of whether their career is in the home or outside the home, that they may have sacrificed their own career aspirations for the sake of their families, and that they may not have had the opportunities to see it to be it, let us be grateful for those who have gone before us with so that we can be whatever we want to be.

This week's news

This week in Careers, students across all year levels are encouraged to start exploring pathways, opportunities, and future goals as we move further into Term 2. There are many exciting events and important dates coming up for students considering university, TAFE, apprenticeships, traineeships, or employment pathways after school.

Our Year 10 students will soon begin their Morrisby Career Interviews, providing valuable one-on-one guidance to help students better understand their strengths, interests, and possible career pathways. These interviews are a fantastic opportunity for students to start making informed decisions about future subject selections and post-school options.

Students in Years 11 and 12 are reminded to begin researching university and TAFE Open Days across Victoria. Open Days are an excellent way to explore campuses, speak with lecturers and current students, and gain insight into courses and career outcomes. We encourage families to attend together where possible.

Important upcoming dates include:

  • Victorian TAFE and University Open Days (July–August 2026)
  • GAT Practice Preparation Activities continuing throughout the term
  • General Achievement Test (GAT) – Wednesday 17 June 2026
  • VTAC information sessions and early entry applications opening later this term

Students interested in apprenticeships or VET pathways should continue checking the Careers Hub for opportunities including School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs), work experience placements, and industry information sessions.

We also encourage students to speak with the Careers Team if they need assistance with resumes, job applications, pathway planning, or course research. No matter what pathway students are considering, now is the perfect time to start exploring possibilities and planning for the future.
