Year 5 & 6
Around our level
On Monday, the Year 5/6 students had a visit from Leading Senior Constable Peter Williams, who spoke to them about cyber safety and responsible online behaviour. Students learned about staying safe online, protecting their personal information, and the importance of treating others respectfully when using social media, games, and messaging platforms. Peter also discussed new laws relating to online platforms and shared practical strategies for recognising and responding to unsafe situations online. The session was informative and engaging, providing students with valuable knowledge to help them make safe and responsible choices in the digital world.

Also this week, the Year 5/6 students have been working hard on an exciting writing project – creating a class book. Students were given the opportunity to choose their own genre and topic, which allowed them to explore their creativity, interests, and imagination. The class has enjoyed reading and discussing a wide range of ideas, from stories and newspaper articles, to informative texts and poems.
Throughout the project, students have followed the full writing process. They began by carefully planning their ideas and organising their thoughts before moving on to drafting their pieces. Students then revised and edited their work, focusing on improving their vocabulary, sentence structure, and overall clarity. Finally, they published their writing, taking pride in presenting a polished piece of work for inclusion in the class book.
This project has provided students with the opportunity to strengthen their writing skills while developing independence and confidence as authors. It has also encouraged creativity, perseverance, and attention to detail as students worked through each stage of the process. We look forward to sharing the completed class book and celebrating the wonderful writing achievements of our Year 5/6 authors.
Here are some of the writing pieces by our students:
Trapped - Jamie G
In a dark, dark room, a girl sits alone,
Not able to see, only looking for home,
She brushes her hair, with the hands that she has,
Only thing she can hear is quiet lazy jazz,
The muffled music plays, and she starts to hum along, but then light starts to shine, from the hallway so long,
She starts to stand up, but her whole body stings,
Then the quiet music stops, and with it, she sings,
A song that is not old, not new is it either,
A song her mother sang, about a girl named Sue-Eva,
‘Trapped in a tower, and so woe was she,
For she had no freedom, but how could that be?
She was once a princess, power so mighty,
But lost all her status, and became just so bitey.
As the girl sits alone, in the dark, gloomy room,
She makes one single wish, to be out of there soon,
She wonders, and wonders, for when her time will come,
Whispering to herself, “why am I just so dumb?"
I’d never done anything that made me not deserve,
A lovely life, a pretty wife, something to preserve,
I have no future, nor no past, I’m stuck here in the present,
I’m stuck living in this life, which has always been unpleasant.
Riddles - Myla J

The Day the Gods Became Angry - Elan G
BANG, BANG, BANG. Everything was silent for a second. Then BOOM! What had happened? And then I saw it. A nuclear power plant had exploded. I was out of the explosion range but I knew that to be safe I had to get as low as possible to survive the shockwave. I only had about ten to five seconds now. I rushed into my house and into my basement just in time for the shockwave to rush past me. When I came back out, my house was destroyed, the roof had fallen down and there were holes in my walls. There was even a random couch in the kitchen. I suspected it had been blown in because of the shockwave. I decided to go to see where the other survivors were but funnily enough as I searched every house, there was no one in the whole neighbourhood. Did it wipe everyone out? I decided to grab everything essential and get on my way.
Space Exploration - Declan A
Space Travel
Our human technologies have improved so much since the 1800s that we have landed on the Moon, sent landers to Mars and Venus, and sent two Voyager spacecraft into deep space until they hit a black hole, star, planet, moon, or anything else, to be exact.
Problems in Space
On the other hand, some major problems have occurred in space, including satellite build-up, which is far too many dead satellites and space junk orbiting our planet Earth. If we don't do something, we could be trapped by it by the year 2040, which is very soon.
Future Space Travel
We will send humans back to the Moon in mid-2028, which is exciting. We are also getting closer to finding ancient life on Mars and maybe even Venus. Unfortunately, in the 2030s, our fellow ISS (International Space Station) will come to the end of its operation.
Artemis 2–3
In other news, our crew for Artemis 3 has been announced, and their mission is planned for late 2027. Artemis 2 will have the first woman to venture near the Moon.
TRYOUTS - VJBL Rep. Team - Eitan D
I stepped onto the court, gazing up at the ring. The coach called everyone into a huddle. We started introducing ourselves, and then he asked us to pick up a ball.
The coach told us to do some dribbling drills. He showed us moves like behind-the-back dribbles, crossovers, and through-the-legs dribbles.
After that, he said we were done. We moved on to shooting drills. We started with some free throws, layups, and then three-pointers.
After that, we started training skills like passing, one-twos, setting screens, and pick-
and-rolls. Then the coach put us into groups of three.
We started playing 3-on-3 games. Then one kid made fun of my height. When we played against each other, I used all my skills and… BAM! I looked down and saw myself hanging on top of the rim!
I quickly got down, and the coach muttered, “I can’t just ban the kid over a dunk. We need him for this team.”
Then he told us that whoever got an email would be on the team.
