What’s Happening in Careers?

Farewell

In our last newsletter, our principal announced that I was leaving Mazenod to take a Careers Practitioner role at Guildford Grammar. This is my final week and so I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Mazenod community for their support. So many members of our community have helped make the Careers program here successful by sharing their experiences and expertise and I have been very grateful for their contributions. It has been such a pleasure to work with the Mazenod community, staff and students and I will cherish the memories.

I know that there is a great team in place here to support the boys. Lauren Johnson and Peta Paduano will be managing the Careers space until my role is filled. They are both qualified Career Practitioners and know the role well, as we have all worked closely together over the past few years. I wish the boys all the best as they continue their journeys at Mazenod.

Year 10

Our subject area presentations are complete. All of the powerpoints are available on the Year 10 portal. Hopefully, the boys have a good idea of their options and have done some thinking about what pathway they want to pursue.

MyPath week will take place in Week 10. There is a great range of events to help the boys broaden their understanding of their subject selection and career options. This is an overview of what the week will look like for them:

Please note that all Mazenod and St Brigids community members are warmly invited to attend the Mazenod MyPath Expo in the gym on Tuesday 18 June. This will be a great opportunity to meet with a broad range of tertiary providers, RTOs and industry areas.

Year 11

Our Year 11 students have returned from WPL and exams, ready to complete the term. The first exams can be quite daunting but are a good learning experience. If students are considering course changes, they should make an appointment to speak to Mrs Angove.

Year 12

In my last session with the university-bound group, we covered HECS debt, HELP Loans and census dates. We also went over TISC applications and Early Offers, to make sure the boys knew what they were doing. They will have the opportunity to go over all of this with the universities when they are on campus next term to have individual conversations with the boys.

Bookings have now closed and the boys should have emails confirming these times. The lists will be up in Mrs Bulich’s office if they need to check. If they need to make changes to appointments, they should see Mrs Paduano. I am very excited for them to have this opportunity to get information firsthand and I hope the boys find it a very useful process.

The General/Apprenticeship-bound students had a great presentation on opportunities in the Oil and Gas industry with Lee Nott from Weatherford Mining.

TISC

TISC is now open.

Early Offers will start after the Semester One exams and most offers are conditional on meeting requirements. These will be laid out in their offer letters.

Offers will be sent out once per month from July to December.

If they are intending to apply for university, they will need to apply through TISC. Registration is online and a fee of $92 is payable before they can set up their preferences. These preferences can be changed as many times as they like before the offers round.

Offers will be out before Christmas.

The boys have had two sessions on TISC applications but if they have further questions they should seek help from the Careers team.

University Information

The universities have all listed their Open Days Register using these links and plan your day so you can make the most of the offerings. It is really important that the boys get on campus and ask lots of questions before they make final decisions.

The Careers Department

Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 have access to The Careers Department. There is a huge wealth of information on this site, where students can explore industries in depth to find out more about the careers and industries they are interested in. It also has a resume builder, digital portfolio, virtual work experience, scholarship finder, job finder and micro-credentialing opportunities. So much to explore!

As parents, you also have access to these resources. Your account will be linked to your son’s account, allowing you to explore together.

There are two ways to connect to your son’s account.

1. Students can invite their parents from their 'Profile' > 'Your account' > scroll to the bottom of this page and add their parent's email address.

2. Go to the login page and follow the prompts to set up an account. Once inside, you will be directed to explore the site and link to your child's account. Your child should already have an active student account, so you will not need to pay for the platform. If he hasn’t registered, do this first. You will need to enter the correct email address according to your son’s account and your son will need to accept the connection.

Careers Newsletter

The attached newsletter has a good write-up with information about some great new courses and assured pathways.

There is plenty of news so please have a good read and enjoy!
