NAIDOC Week

This week our school has celebrated NAIDOC Week.

As the children, staff and walked through the school they have been surrounded by an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Hall of Fame showcasing famous and prominent Indigenous Australians. Each morning, as a school we have had an Acknowledgement of Country read aloud by a student leader over the PA.

On Tuesday, we gathered as a school community for a NAIDOC Week Liturgy. We acknowledged and celebrated the achievements and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We also acknowledged 2023 St Helena’s graduate, Donald, whose artwork is on our new staff shirt, banners and other places around our school, and presented his Nan with a shirt for him.

Each day this week, our students have learnt about prominent or influential Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and participated in different events that celebrate these individual's achievements.

Our Kindy children have learnt about Cathy Freeman, and practised sprinting like she did in the 2000 Olympics.

From Pre-Kindy to Year Six, students learnt about local Noongar artist, J.D. Penangke and the colour murals she creates. They have joined together to make a mural using an assortment on Noongar symbols on the pavement.

Our Year Two Echidnas students have learnt about computer scientist Tamina Pitt, and coded the Sphero Indi Robots to retell the story of Dunbi the Owl. Our Year Two Platypuses practised their goal kicking skills as they tried to be like Buddy Franklin.

Students across the school have studied Harold Thomas the creator of the Aboriginal Flag. Depending upon their age, students looked at the symbolism and history behind the flag, and recreated it using collages and painting.

On Thursday our Year One and Two students participated in a Bush Tucker incursion with Natasha from SERCUL. Students learnt about the importance of looking after country, and how when country is taken care of it can provide for everyone.

Congratulations Leisel and Sara for winning the NAIDOC Week colouring in competition this week. We hope you enjoy your prize!
