Principal's Report

Mr Pitt

Dear Parents/ Carers,

Welcome to the Week 8 Newsletter. The end of term is just around the corner. I am currently busily reading every child’s school report - quite a long process but one which I enjoy immensely each and every year. More information regarding school reports is in my report below.

REPEATED: SCHOOL UNIFORM WINTER MONTHS

As mentioned, a little earlier this term, the colder weather has most definitely arrived. Please note it is important that students continue to wear full school uniform during this time. It is also a timely reminder that students should not keep layers of clothing on when in the classroom. In Winter, both girls and boys should wear the school tracksuit to school. Please visit the Uniform Hub for the latest sales on various items. Our classrooms are heated so students should take their jumper/ jacket off, only to put it back on when leaving the classroom at break and home time.

BIKE VISITS WITH MR PITT

Over the last fortnight, I visited 2 Freeman and 5 Hodges. Read more about my visit below:

2F – Last Thursday I visited 2F during a maths lesson. Children were busily working on their own investigations. Some of the investigations included dividing counters into 2 groups, and some children were even learning about left over counters. It was pleasing to hear everyone share their learning with a partner, then demonstrate their understanding in their maths book. Great work 2F!

5H – I enjoyed my visit to 5H last Thursday morning as I was able see the wonderful progress and confidence the children demonstrated when reading with fluency. After both partners had a turn at reading, children returned to the floor to learn more about some of the words in the text – the two words selected were prevention and destruction. After this, children were brainstorming modal words they could use to convince others to protect Macquarie Island. Lots of engaged learners in 5H today! Well done everyone!

SCHOOL REPORTS

Semester One Reports, including Class Wrap Ups, will be sent home on Thursday 27 June. Please talk to your child about their report. Our reports look a little different this year as we have included grade comments for every key learning area. In English and Maths, focus areas are covered with what students are able to do and what they are learning to do. Break Activities, FAIR Core Capabilities and the General Comment from the teacher remains the same. Take the time to read each key learning area and the progress your child has made. Can I also state that a C grade is sound achievement – this means the child is working at grade level. Be proud of the achievement your child has made during semester one.

PARENT/ TEACHER INTERVIEWS

I am hoping you have requested an interview time to meet your child’s teacher. Be mindful that your child’s teacher has up to 20 or more parents to see during the afternoon/ evening. This interview is strictly 10 minutes. Reminders will not be sent home this year so please ensure you print out the slip once you complete the online booking form. Parent/ Teacher Interviews are in Week 10 in the school hall (please use the Wolseley Street entrance).

REFUGEE WEEK 2024

We’ve had a lovely week celebrating Refugee Week this week. The theme for 2024 is ‘Finding Freedom: Family’. The resilience of families torn apart by conflict or persecution inspires communities to come together and extend a hand of solidarity and compassion to those seeking refuge. Thank you to the Multicultural Education Project Team for planning the class activity this year (which is displayed outside the hall roller door) and for Mrs Bawa for compiling the theme in the library. See some pics in this edition of the newsletter.

END OF SEMESTER CELEBRATIONS

We have a busy week coming up in Week 10. Our Semester 1 Assemblies, with invitation letters given only to those parents/ carers whose children are receiving an award.

Have a great fortnight.
