Marvelous Modelling

JP students have been learning about the element of Form while they modelled landscapes with plasticine and sculpted turtles using air drying clay.

Before making their turtles the children experimented with the clay, and practiced making a pinch pot and a coil, either as a plate or another pot. Making their creatures involved learning the ‘slip, score and smooth’ method, to ensure joins were good and less likely to cause a break when dry.

They also used clay tools and stamping objects to add texture to the turtle’s shell.

The turtles will be brightly painted before they make their way home.

Alexander Beetle

After hearing the poem and song of 'Forgiven' by A A Milne,  we discussed how small a beetle would have to be to fit inside a matchbox.

We were learning about the element of Space and the design principal of Proportion.

Children made a tiny insect or mini beast that might live in a match box.

Students needed to make ball shapes and roll legs out of plasticine. These skills will be handy when we use clay!
