Nutrition and Sustainable Food Production: Plant to Plate PLT 2

In Design and Technology this semester, students in Primary 4, 5 and 6 have discussed the foods we do and do not like, the 5 food groups, how our senses affect what we eat and what food comes from plants or animals, farm or factories. Students have been describing the ways food can be selected and prepared for healthy eating when talking about their own lunch boxes. They then designed their own healthy lunch boxes based on their personal preferences. Together, as a cohort, they then followed steps, used materials and safely used equipment to make their very own garden to produce these foods. Once planted, they watched their plants flourish over the following 5 weeks. Last Thursday the crops were harvested and this saw their designs come to life. ‘Plant to Plate’ was a huge success as all students were engaged throughout the entire process. We even had staff from school provide us with further home grown produce of mandarins, eggs, tomatoes and cucumbers which were a delicious addition to our lunch (Thank you Miss Jo, Miss Anita and Miss Sally). The students described their lunch as yummy, best lunch ever, I like it, good, green and tasty.
