Melbourne Urban Camp: Portia Lee

Urban Camp took place on the 18th of June & ended on the 21st of June (Tuesday-Friday). All three year six classes went on an adventure to Royal Park on the first day (Miss West’s choice), before even going to the zoo. After everyone had a cheeky snack & a little play around, we set off to find our first destination; the zoo. The teachers had split the classes into groups of ten, each one examining certain areas of the zoo. We saw all kinds of animals, but the best ones appeared to be the two dancing monkeys, a gorilla who likes to mime & of course, everyone's personal favourite (definitely), the tall giraffes. Soon after leaving the zoo, having returned to our beloved Urban Camp, we had our first dinner away from home. We set off by bus to Go climb, a rock climbing & play area full of thrilling arrangements of friendly excitement, much sooner than we would’ve expected. Though very tiring, it was certainly very fun. So, yeah, a lot of excitement from the first day in our dear Melbourne city.

On the second day, we went to the lovely MCG, (Melbourne Cricket Ground) by tram. When we arrived, we explored the ground eagerly, eventually being allowed to step onto the very edge of the pitch. Each of our guides shared facts about the place, one after the other. There were also exclusive games inside the MCG, which needed a special wrist band to activate them. After a long while in the sporting mist of the MCG, we left to go have lunch at another park. More of our precious time was spent at another park, but this time for longer. After eating a fresh sandwich of our choice, we set forth towards ACMI(Australian Centre for the Moving Image). We got an introduction of how ACMI works from one of their wonderful employees, plus a disk to download the information on what you find interesting in the building. There were a lot of interesting rooms that intrigued us, one room even had games that you could play in it, keyboard & controller included. Then finally, there was a room where the stars surrounded us, a place where you can see what you’ve downloaded in the ACMI disk. Although I did that just before we left, sleeping in there took up most of the time. That was almost the last adventure of the second day, as we had a movie night to endure sadly. Such a shame we had popcorn & pillows while watching, eventually snoozing away afterwards. On the third day, we left Urban Camp quite early to arrive at the Immigration Museum by public transport and oh boy, was it huge. Like usual, the employee gave us an introduction of the place & led us to a research room. We sat at tables that had different objects that tell a person’s story. People from South Sudan, Vietnam, Japan, etc, their life stories were told. When the stories had finished, the lady/man (Just note that different groups had different people who did this part) who had introduced herself/himself when we entered the room gave us all passports for our adventure there. It gave us the responsibility to fill it in & take care of it on our way. We looked throughout the building, exploring its rooms & gaining information. But the most famous part of the museum was The Long Room. The Italianate revival style of Victorian-era architecture. Think of tall ionic columns, a very high ceiling and extensive hand-laid, detailed tiling. This created an opulent atmosphere in this appropriately named space. The Long Room was inspiring in its size, ideal for gala dinners and cocktail events. Anyway- cheeky fact about the Long Room, after having a look around the place, exploring the rooms, some more thoroughly than others, we left to go back to Urban Camp by tram.

The next morning, we continued to adventure before coming home, tired and ready for the weekend. Certainly a memorable camp.

Interschool Sports

Xavier (football)

Lena Ngo: In netball, each team played extremely well. As we all played to the best of our abilities, in the end we all learnt some skills and made new friends. Our girls team had won 5/5, while the mixed team had won 3/5 .

Izak Kukla: In soccer this term the girls team won all of their games and made finals and the boys team won three out of five games and didn’t make finals. Our toughest game for both the teams was against St Elizabeth’s where the girl’s team won one nil due to Sydney scoring a free-kick in the last minute and the boys team lost five nil. Everybody had fun playing soccer this term and learning lots of new skills and we all tried our hardest.
