Celebrations of learning at Lucas Primary School
Year 3/4 in Term 2
Writing: In writing this term, students have been exploring different text types including letters, narratives, expositions and information reports. Students really enjoyed writing a ‘letter to a soldier’ after learning about ANZAC day and researching the historical context of WW1. Students have drawn on the geography learning they have been engaging in Integrated Studies to write an Information Report about a national park. Students have also been learning about countries in Africa and South America and they have been writing persuasives about ‘why you should visit’ their chosen country. We are all excited to showcase our amazing writing in our student portfolios at the end of term.
Reading: In Reading this term, we have been working on different reading strategies from our Systems of Strategic Actions (SOSA) wheel. We have looked at making different connections including text-to-self, text-to-world and text-to-text connections within different texts. We have also been looking at inferring and how we can use pictures, characters and the plot within texts to extend our understanding of what is happening in each book. We have been using our think mark skills to show how we show these different strategies while reading.
Numeracy: In Numeracy this we have been refreshing our knowledge on time. Students made their own clocks and got to test each other to demonstrate their understanding of the language. Students have also learnt to add up money amounts and work out the total change given, using fake money.
Integrated Studies: In Integrated Studies we have been learning about Geography. The students started learning about our country Australia, then have learnt about the 7 continents of the world. We have looked specifically and in more detail at 2 of the continents- Africa and South America.
Spelling: In Spelling this term, students have been exploring a range of sounds and spelling patterns. Each week, students have completed a range of tasks, such as word searches, word sorts, dictations and sound boxes, to assist in developing their understanding of specific sound families.
SWPBS: This term, students have been unpacking our Behaviour Matrix and what this looks like in alignment with our school values. During this fortnight, students will look at Excellence and what it means to give and receive feedback to improve our learning. Students will look at types of feedback; including giving classmates a compliment, a suggestion and posing a question for future learning. Students will also explore what it means to take pride in their work and how this can be shown in their work samples.
