From the Classroom - Jess (B5)
Humanities - Local History
This term in Humanities, students have been learning about local cultures and celebrations, with the first half of the term focused on the cultures of ourselves and others. We are now moving our focus towards local history. On Monday, the 3/4 classes went on a heritage walk around Miners Rest. On our walk, we observed locations close to the school, their history and how they have changed over time. This included a former swamp located in Dundas Street and the bluestone home that was the first erected house in Miners Rest. We discussed the various reasons for the changes to our community over time, with students offering ideas such as no need for particular resources and updating buildings to modernise or maintain integrity.
Camp Wyuna 2024
Last week, our Year 4 students made the trip down to Queenscliff for a three day camp experience. It was a major success with lots of fun, sunshine and activities. We will be providing a thorough summary of our camp experience at this week's Assembly as well as in next week's 3/4 Newsletter piece. But for now, here are B5's favourite things about their time at camp:
- Arham - My favourite thing about camp was pizza making and archery.
- Ava - My favourite thing about camp was going to the Marine Discovery Centre because I liked looking at all the fishies.
- Braxton K - Spending time in the cabins with my friends and the boat ride because it was fast.
- Ivy - The boat ride because I really like seals and I liked looking through the seaweed.
- Evelynn - Going to the beach because I like the beach. I liked playing Troy's running game.
- Annabelle - I really liked going to the beach and making the pizza.
- Braxton P - The boat ride because I got to see the seals and a bunch of other animals.
- Abbey - The boat ride because I love the sea and I got to hold animals.
Reminders
- Our excursion to Sovereign Hill is next Tuesday the 4th of June. It is looking to be a fun and exciting day. Students need to pack a small bag that includes packed fruit, snack, lunch and a drink bottle. Weather dependent, students may wish to bring sunscreen and a hat also, since we will be outside for majority of the day. No spending money is to be brought on the excursion.
- A friendly reminder to keep up with home reading (at least 3 nights each week) and record this in student diaries. As the students get older, they spend less time reading their books aloud as they are now proficient and will read quietly in their heads. Therefore, the opportunity to read with a family member each night allows them to practise and further develop their reading fluency. If you have any questions or would like any advice, please come and see me (or your classroom teacher).
