Year 5/6 Team News

with Laura, Christina, Emil, Molly, Bianca I, Kayleen, Steven & Melati

Hello Year 5/6 families,

Literacy

This week’s spelling focus is the prefix “hyper-” meaning “over” and “hypo-” meaning “under”. Students bring their spelling words home each week and though it is not a compulsory element of the homework, you might like to spend some time reading and discussing the words. Perhaps when your child reads to you or does their own independent reading, you might like to search for words from the list or words that are connected, discuss the meaning and note the spelling choices.

Numeracy

In Maths, students are finishing their unit on shape and will be moving into a project about measurement, perimeter, area, volume, capacity and mass. The students will be given a scenario where they need to design a community garden, measure for fencing, plant seeds and calculate the yield of their harvest. We hope that this will prove engaging and enlightening.

Inquiry

“Political parties” continue to meet to develop their “brand”. Logos, mottos and policies are all complete and ministries are writing profiles for themselves and developing their plans for how they will implement their proposed policies.

Respectful Relationships

This term we will be looking at the following Child Safe topics: Body Ownership & Private Zones, Safe and Unsafe Touch, Saying No and Child Abuse. We advise you to be prepared for questions about this content at home.

Reminders:

  • Please continue to monitor Compass for alerts and updates,
  • If you think you might like to volunteer on excursions and events this year, please ensure that you have arranged a valid Working With Children Check and complete the school’s online induction module.
  • Please ensure your child brings a charged iPad to school each day.

Warm regards,

The Grade 5/6 Team - Laura Bartholomeusz (5/6B), Christina Crosland (5/6C), Emil de Vries (5/6D), Bianca Italiano & Molly Hedditch (5/6I), Kayleen Dumic & Steven Puhar (5/6K) & Melati Cordell (5/6M)
