Prep Team News

with Caitlin, Hayley & Andrea

Hello Prep families,

It has been another wonderful week in Prep! Our Prep assembly this week included celebrating our wonderful Willy and Super Kids with awards. We also continued to celebrate the fabulous home reading with twenty and fifty nights of reading awards being presented.

Our Willy Kid focus this week is Willy Kids are Problem Solvers. We have been reading the Paper Bag Princess and discussing how we can be great problem solvers at school. Our Preps are problem solvers who try to independently resolve issues and know who to ask for help when they need assistance. Keep it up, Preps!

Fire Ed Incursion

We are having firefighters from our local fire station visit us this Friday the 24th of May. This will be the first of two sessions that helps our students to understand more about home fire safety. Please let your child’s teacher know if you have any questions.

Wicked Weather Incursion

Last Wednesday, the Preps took part in our Wicked Weather Incursion, as part of our inquiry unit. Students participated in a range of experiments to learn about change including making snow and rain and exploring the impact of UV light.

Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea

On Friday 10th May, the Preps hosted a Mother’s Day afternoon tea to honour the special people in their lives. It was wonderful to see all their hard work pay off as they shared gifts, cards and a song with our guests. Thank you to those families that were able to attend. There were lots of big smiles and happy people in our classrooms!

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 5 - 6

Reading - Students will continue learning about appropriate reading behaviours, including pointing to the words as we read. They will also discuss text features such as full stops and capital letters. As part of our Little Learner’s program, students begin the year learning single letter sounds, with our current focus being the /y/, /r/ and /e/ sounds. To help us remember these sounds, we have met Yasmin the yak, Roxy the rabbit and Eddy the elephant. There are songs about these characters available online, which you may like to listen to with your child at home or in the car:

Yasmin the yak - Spotify

Roxy the rabbit - Spotify

Eddy the elephant - Spotify

Writing - Students are learning to correctly form letters and use our sound knowledge to write sentences. This week we are focusing on forming the letters ‘y’, ‘r’ and ‘e’. We are also learning to read and write the heart words ‘she’, ‘he’, ‘we’, ‘to’, ‘do’ and ‘was’ this term.

Numeracy - Students are exploring addition. We are using hands-on materials to solve addition problems, write these as a number sentence and apply them to problem solving activities.

Inquiry - This term, our inquiry topic is Changes Around Us. Our big questions will include: What is change? What things change? What is changing outside?

Homework - Each Monday, students will be given an activity to complete at home that relates to our weekly sound or maths focus. The activity in their ‘Home Learning Book’ will be collected each Friday. Homework in Prep should take no longer than 15 minutes.
