The How to corner ....

How to help yourself and your child to find calm in moments of high emotions.

We can't always take long walks in the forest to find our calm and reset our emotions. There are some other ways we can bring down the heightened sensation we feel when we are stressed or feeling anxious.

When we are in a state of anxiety it is hard to follow instructions and hard to focus on making good choices.  Below is a technique that may help bring a child or an adult back to being calm and present in the moment.

This grounding technique is good to practice when things are going well, walking to school, in the bath or getting ready for bed. Practicing this technique when they are not anxious will help them to feel confident to do this when they are feeling anxious.   Ask them to find 5 things they can see, 4 things they can feel, 3 things they can hear, 2 things they can smell, 1 thing they can taste, take a deep breath and say the word Calm.

There are also many breathing techniques that can help support you and your child during anxious moments.
