Multicultural Committee News

The second term is in full swing, bustling with school events as usual.

During the third Multicultural Committee (MC) meeting on Monday, May 6th, from 12:45 pm to 1:30 pm, we had the pleasure of hosting Suzy Georgievski, Multicultural Services Officer from Services Australia (previously known as Centrelink), as our guest speaker. Suzy, who operates from the Geelong office and serves the entire South West Area, shared a wealth of information on a variety of subjects with students, staff, and members of the community network.

A key aspect of Suzy’s role involves helping early migrants navigate Centrelink services. Additionally, she leads information seminars covering topics such as:

- Updates from Services Australia

- Refugee and Newly Arrived Payments & Services

- Digital Services, Online Accounts, and MyGov

- Debt Prevention and Compliance

- Family and Domestic Violence

- Jobseeker Payments, Job Searching, and Participation Requirements

- Youth Allowance and Austudy

- Parenting Payments, Family Tax Benefit, and Child Care-related Immunisation

- Age Pension and associated subjects

- Carer and DSP payments

- Financial Information Services, including income and assets, aged care services, self-employment assessment, budgeting and saving, retirement planning, and superannuation

- Assurance of Support and Special Benefit

We are immensely thankful to Suzy for imparting such crucial information and services to our NGSC community. She has kindly proposed to conduct additional sessions in the future. The Multicultural Committee expresses its heartfelt gratitude to Suzy for her excellent presentation and the effort and time she invested. Her contributions have been highly valued by the MC members, and we eagerly anticipate her next visit.

As we gear up for our annual Multicultural Festival, set for October 25th this year, we are thrilled to reveal the theme at our forthcoming meeting. We warmly invite you to join our committee to learn more.

Food Studies Teacher / Technology

Tales of a NGSC Staff Member

Each fortnight, we take the time to get to know an employee at NGSC - this week, the limelight is on......

Mr Luke Sharp

What is your role at NGSC?

Classroom teacher of Food Studies, Year 10 Co-ordinator and first nations Coordinator.

Where did you study and what qualifications did you receive?

Studied at Victoria University in Footscray, receiving Bachelor of Education Prep -12 majoring in Food Studies and Physical Education. Consuming countless Banh Mi over the journey!

How long have you been employed at NGSC?

This is my sixth year at the College.

What’s the best part about working at NGSC

The vast diversity amongst the students at the College. I love varying life situations, countries of origin, languages spoken around the yard and the conversation that this creates with the students. Each day I learn something new.

What is your favourite thing to do on the weekends?

Currently really enjoying a relaxing Saturday morning bike ride with my wife and son. A few coffees, pastries of some description. Usually, a croissant or two from Born & bread or Panne de Matteo without any time restraint.

What is your favourite cuisine?

Very hard question for me to answer, it’s a question I think about a lot.  With the cold weather looming, I find myself gravitating towards a lot of slow cooked, carb heavy food. So, I would say Italian is very much in vogue at the moment.  Osso Bucco, Lasagne, Ragout, Focaccia etc.

What song / music / band are you currently obsessed with?

Really enjoying King Stingray’s new Album. Getting a fair run on my Spotify.

Where is your favourite destination to travel?

Japan!  Vast history, phenomenal cuisine, incredibly warm and friendly people and a culture that makes your head spin.

Do you have a favourite saying that picks you up when you’re feeling a bit down?

‘What do you do when all of your dreams come true’ Anthony Bourdain

*REMINDER*

Students with conditions such as asthma, allergies, anaphylaxis, diabetes, and seizures are required to visit their general practitioner (GP) annually for the renewal of their medical plans. The school is currently awaiting the submission of many students' medical plans. Your prompt attention and cooperation in providing these documents are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
