Reconciliation week 2024

We have had a great week learning about First Nations history and culture this week, with classes across the school engaged in learning, texts and displays that support the Reconciliation week theme of "Now more than ever" .

We will be celebrating this work in a special Reconciliation assembly next Friday, where we will showcase our learning for the community.

Our senior students have been making magpie artworks in Art this week, inspired by local artist Katie Sandison, dreamtime artworks are being created in Junior Primary classes, and 'pop art' is being created from Kaurna language, after listening to Jack Buckskin share Kaurna words from the '50 words' project.

This project from the Research Unit for Indigenous Language aims to provide fifty words in Indigenous languages of Australia as a useful resource for schools and educational organisations to learn 50 words in their local languages. Next week there will be indigenous Jewellery making sessions happening across the school, provided by one of our local parents. We look forward to sharing this and more in our Assembly next Friday at 9:30. All are welcome.

We also think it is important  that we acknowledge that Reconciliation isn't only for Reconciliation Week, with our school Reconciliation Action Plan committee recently meeting to create several sub-committees to support the development of more indigenous content in our curriculum, to better engage with our families and to explore school and Department policies to implement positive change for our First Nations families. We look forward to sharing this work as it progresses over the year.

Woodville Gardens School is incredibly diverse, and it is a strength of our community that we can come together and feel proud to share our differences and our cultures with each other. Thank you to all who have supported the Reconciliation week projects this week.
