Dear Parents,

We had a wonderful open day last Friday. It was such a great day with our school leaders taking parents on tour to look at our beautiful school. We have our second Open Day this Tuesday and then a twilight open night the following week on May 29th. Please promote these events in the community and invite any prospective parents to come along and do a tour.

Thanks to our Eucharist students and families, Sue Jackson and Luke Hewitt for attending the family and Eucharist commitment Mass at Shoreham. It was such a lovely morning and the community at St Peter's Shoreham is such a special faith filled community who always welcome our families with a great sense of belonging and we are lucky to have such a positive connection.

I draw your attention to the learning section of our newsletter. Our Vice Principal Sue Jackson highlights our learning design.

Recently, there has been a lot of focus into educational research on the Science of Learning. This research shows that teaching practices that are aligned with how students learn are the most effective in improving education outcomes for all. It also shows strong evidence about the processes that occur during learning. These processes explain why some teaching practices are more effective than others.

The Australian Education Research Organisation (AREO) has created a model to explain how effective teaching practices align with how students learn. The model is shown on the learning page of the newsletter. It includes how students learn by focusing on moving knowledge to long term memory through explicit instruction, retention, recall and mastery and application.

At St Joseph's we have used this research for some time and have embedded these practises throughout our policies and practises. This includes the purchasing or designing of programs such as Multilit, Spelling Mastery, Number Fluency Bricks, Daily reviews and many more. Congratulations to Sue and the learning team on all of the excellent work that is occurring in our school.

Recently on our kinder beach walk some of our our 3/4 students took off their coats and gave them to little kinder kids who were cold. May we always be a community who is looking out for others and passing kindness on in inspiring faith filled ways. At St Joseph’s we follow the lead set by Mary Mackillop and never see a need without addressing it.
