Student Leadership Update: Exciting Initiatives and Achievements
This term has been an incredibly productive and exciting period for our student leaders. After the successful completion of the World's Greatest Shave project, which raised an impressive $5,700, the student leaders are gearing up for a series of new initiatives over the next six months.
Upcoming Events and Projects
Maffra's Got Talent: Kicking off at the beginning of Term 3, this much-anticipated event will showcase the diverse talents of our students. It's a wonderful opportunity for students to shine and for the school community to come together in celebration of our collective creativity. Students will be able to collect an Entry Form from either Talmaru or the Year 9 office. This year, there will be 7 categories: Solo instrumental, Group instrumental, Singing (group or solo), Magic/Tricks/Comedy, Theatre, Dance and Other. Entry Forms need to be returned to the Year 9 office by Friday 21st June.
PJ Day: Mark your calendars for Wednesday, June 12th! This fun-filled day will not only see everyone in their comfiest pajamas but also aims to raise funds for a new flagpole on school grounds, adding to our sense of community and pride.
National Sorry Day: In recognition of National Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day on May 26th, our Year 7 and 8 student leaders and Diversity Captains have been working hard to prepare and organise a lesson and whole-school activity for L2L on Thursday 30th June. This initiative is an important part of our commitment to reconciliation and understanding the significance of this day.
Push Up Challenge: A MSC Student Team and MSC Staff Team have been created for this year’s Push Up Challenge, which starts 1st June. The challenge is to complete 3,249 push-ups in 24 days, from 5th-28th June (or 1,625 if you're aiming for the half-target). This represents the number of lives lost to suicide in Australia in 2022 (the most recent available data). So far, we have 7 students and 3 staff sign up and would love to see a few more. Term 3 Projects: The student leaders are also planning to celebrate Book Week in Term 3 and they will soon start the planning for our annual Carnival Day.
Enhancing Student Voice
In recent weeks, a number of students from Years 7 to 11 have actively participated in student voice focus groups. These sessions have been instrumental in generating ideas and strategies aimed at enhancing student engagement and agency. The insights from these focus groups will be presented in a student-led staff meeting later this term. During this meeting, students will share their ideas, and staff will work in PLC groups to identify and implement strategies to improve student engagement across the college.
The student leaders are excited about the collaborative efforts with classroom teachers and staff to see a tangible improvement in student voice at Maffra SC. This initiative aligns with our key improvement strategy of developing and implementing a consistent student voice and strategy across the college.
Stay tuned for more updates and join us in supporting these fantastic initiatives.
