We had many parents attend the workshops. Some of the topics discussed included:

*The importance of reading to children; parents, grandparents read to children

*Make use of your Public Library; become a member

*Time in the car;  use audiobooks - SORA and Town Library

*Reading to help writing; the more children read the more extensive their vocabulary will be and see language in use.

*Reading Vs Devices - and monitor time on a device;

*Reluctant readers; - use a reward system - stamp chart, bookclub order

*Encourage writing for a purpose; - write ot a shopping list , a diary of a holiday, create own birthday cards for the famiy etc.

*Shared memories and making connections with life and family experiences are great conversation and creative writing starters.

***Here is a snapshot of the workshops our students experienced

this year with Dr Cameron.

Lots of pics next week.

Kinders - Stories and More  - These students were introduced to the Stroogle and it's amazing adventures. They were shown how Dr Cameron creates this interesting character and all the extra fairytale characters which appear in the picture books.

Yr 1 / 2 - Inspirational Ideas / Writing Workshop; Use 3 interesting things around you to create your story - "I once... " use a memory and make it as exciting and unbelievable as you like.

Ask your child what this means.

Yr 5 / 6 Lights, Camera, Action Writing Workshop - Students experimented with adding tension to their writing by adding a 2nd and 3rd problem to the plot. Dr Cameron advised the students that utilising the 5 senses builds intensity.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME

Next week Wednesday around Australia, schools and libraries will enjoy Aura Parker's

"BOWERBIRD BLUES".

Students amy wish to bring in one small blue item eg a button, thread ribbon, small piece of paper, a hair clip, a pencil, etcto add to the

BOWER BIRD BLUES display in the library.

"I am a collector. Always looking, finding ... and keeping! Bowerbird loves blue. Magnificent cobalt. Brilliant, vibrant blue! But something is missing. What could it be?"

This new picture book from Aura Parker stars a beautiful bowerbird on the search for blue! It’s a moving story of longing and connection, that unfolds as the bowerbird’s search sends him soaring across the sea, sky and city. He swoops and snatches vibrant treasures for his collection, and soon his bower – a mix of natural and unnatural objects – attracts something greater and more fulfilling than he could ever have imagined.

CHOICE = Motivation

"The strongest positive impact on reading engagement and learning gains come from student self-selection of reading materials. When reading materials are selected for students the links to engagement and learning gain decline significantly."

How Reading Motivation and Engagement Enable Reading Achievement: Policy Implications, Ana Taboada Barber and Susan Lutz Klauda

When students visit the library a huge emphasis is placed on the

premise that they have

 CHOICE

in what they can read and borrow.

LIBRARY BAGS

Please note a LIBRARY BAG is the first item on your child's equipment list for this year.

Thank you for ensuring your child has a library bag. I have some spares and will issue these to students next week who have not yet presented with a bag.

LIBRARY BAGS MATTER...  Not just some of the time but all of the time.

No food or drink on my books.

Food and drink are for the chooks.

Library bags keep ‘em clean.

Books are cool don’t treat ‘em mean.

Bring your bag every time.

Fill it up and get in line.

Have it scanned and scoot on out.

LIBRARY BAGS

We all shout.
