Dear families,

As we wrap up Term 1, I wanted to share a quick update on some of the activities and initiatives we've been working on with some of the students to support their emotional wellbeing and social growth. This term, we've focused on helping them become more aware of their emotions, explore different coping strategies, and build positive behaviours through fun and interactive activities.

Term 1 Highlights:

Emotional Awareness & Expression

We've been using creative activities like memory games and fun "bug" characters (each representing different feelings) to help students identify and express different emotions. These activities have helped them better understand their feelings and what might trigger them. We’ve also introduced the Feelings Journal, where students reflect on different emotions each week. For example, one student explored the emotion of “boredom” and discovered how it can actually spark creativity—a great insight!

Coping Strategies

We've learned a few techniques to manage big feelings. One of the tools is the "Traffic Light System," which helps students recognize when they’re moving from calm to frustrated and how to take a step before emotions get too strong. We’ve also practiced deep breathing, positive affirmations, and grounding techniques like the "5-4-3-2-1" method.

Building Self-Confidence

Through fun activities like step-by-step LEGO building and creative projects like stop-motion animation, students have been encouraged to take on challenges, build their confidence, and understand the importance of persistence.

Friendship & Social Skills

Students have also been practicing their empathy and communication skills in group activities, where we discuss what makes a good friend and how to resolve conflicts in positive ways. These sessions have helped build greater understanding and cooperation among classmates.

I’m really proud of the progress the students have made in their emotional and social development, and I’m excited to keep building on these foundations in the upcoming terms.

Holiday Activities to Try at Home

As the holidays approach, here are a few simple and fun activities that your child can do at home to continue supporting their emotional and social growth.

LEGO Building & Problem Solving: If your child loves LEGO, why not work on a step-by-step project together? It’s a great way to reinforce patience and focus, plus they get to follow instructions and enjoy the process.

Nature Walks & Observation:

Take a walk outside and encourage your child to notice the world around them.

You can talk about the different emotions they might feel as they encounter new sights or experiences, helping them connect nature with their feelings.

Create a Stop-Motion Animation: If your child enjoys stories, making a stop-motion animation with toys or drawings can be a fun project. It encourages creativity and focus, and they’ll feel proud of what they create. (You can use apps like stop motion studio or cloud stop motion)

Cook a Meal Together: Involve your child in planning and cooking a meal together. Cooking can teach patience, responsibility, and teamwork while giving you a chance to chat and bond.

Create a Family Time Capsule: Have each family member contribute something small to a time capsule—photos, notes, or mementos that represent the current moment. Seal the capsule and set a date to open it in the future. This activity fosters family bonding and helps children reflect on their experiences and values in the present moment while focusing on reflection and gratitude.
Outdoor Nature Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of items to find outside—such as a specific type of leaf, a rock shaped like a heart, or a bird's feather. Kids can take pictures or collect the items as they find them. This activity encourages kids to pay attention to their surroundings, promotes physical activity, mindfulness, appreciation for nature, and observation skills.

I hope these ideas give you some easy and enjoyable ways to support your child's social and emotional growth over the holidays.
