5/6 Learning News

Wumindjika

A tradition in the 5/6 space is reflecting every afternoon on one positive thing that has happened during the day. We thought we would extend this to one positive thing that has happened this Term!

Jack - Watching War Horse because we got to read the book and then see it in movie form

Morgan - The learning I achieved in maths

Seb - Swimming sports because I got to go to division, and I felt proud

Ivy - My leadership badge and my Mary Mackillop award

Shan - Watching the leadership flourish through our election

Literacy

To finalise our learning this term, we dug deeper into War Horse, exploring its themes and historical context through creative projects.

Some learners redesigned the book’s front cover, while others recreated key scenes using construction and stop-motion animation. Some composed soundtracks for significant moments, while others mapped out detailed timelines of World War I.

To wrap up our learning, we watched the movie adaptation, sparking great discussions on how and why key moments were altered for the screen. We analysed changes in pacing, audience engagement, and logistical challenges, gaining a deeper understanding of storytelling across different mediums.

Civics & Citizenship: Together We Belong

Last week, I spoke about the incredible leadership skills on display, and my goodness, these guys have blown me away yet again! At last week’s assembly, we held a Q&A session where candidates engaged in democratic discussions with our school community. They asked thoughtful questions, listened to different perspectives, and gathered insights into  what changes/improvements their peers wanted to see.

From there, we took a deep dive into campaign strategies by creating slogans that reflected our goals and values. We also analysed real-world political slogans, discussing what makes them effective and how they influence voters. Some of the slogans learners came up with were both creative and persuasive, such as

Sport is for all, so come grab a ball - Seb

Let's get the garden growing and flowing again - Morgan

Fundraising is so fun, plus its for everyone! - Eli and River

Finally, we held our very own election! Candidates passionately presented their promises, outlining their vision for positive change. As voting time approached, the room buzzed with anticipation. Our leaders experienced first-hand the mix of excitement and nerves that political leaders must feel, having put themselves forward, shared their ideas, and campaigned hard, all they could do now was wait. It was a powerful insight into the pressure, responsibility, and emotional highs and lows that come with leadership, whether in our school or on a global stage.

I am incredibly proud to announce our successful candidates:

🏅 Sports Leaders: Seb & Jack

This is the first time I’ve had the privilege of teaching the same group for a second year, and I’m loving it! Watching their growth, both academically and personally, has been so rewarding. Together, we’re challenging ourselves to be our best and making our classroom a enjoyable place to be. This group is kind-hearted, curious, and passionate, and I feel truly blessed to work alongside such incredible humans.

A huge well done to everyone for their hard work and enthusiasm, enjoy a well-earned break

See you all in Term 2!
