YEAR 4

FROM THE CLASSROOM
We are officially halfway through Term 3 and our students have been learning so many new things!
In Inquiry, we have begun to learn about the first fleet. Students investigated what life was like for a convict on the first fleet and what the conditions were like on the journey.
In Reading this week, we analysed the poem ‘Sound the Alarm’ which tells the story of the convict John Powers and his attempted escape from the Alexander in 1787. Students identified rhyme, the pattern of the text, inferred meaning from certain verses and summarised the key events within the poem.
In Talk 4 Write we finalised our writing unit on Narrative Writing with a setting focus. Students applied their skills in using time and weather starters and adjectives to help the reader picture the setting within their story. Next week we will begin our next text, an information report called, 'The Land of Never Believe'.
In Mathematics this week the Year 4 students continued to deepen their understanding of place value involving decimals. They identified the value of the digits and made connections between decimals and fractions involving tenths and hundredths. From there, classes began to apply decimals to financial situations involving money, rounding values to the nearest 5 cents and adding items to find a total.
