What's happening in the Prep rooms?

Prep Students Learn About First Aid! 🩹🚑

Last week, CJC students participated in whole-school First Aid training with St John Ambulance.

On Friday, our Prep students had the opportunity to learn about what an emergency is, what to do in an emergency, and most importantly, how to keep themselves and others safe.

The session was highly interactive, with students learning how to use bandages to wrap a wound, identifying the emergency number 000, and practising what information to provide when calling for help. Students also explored a social story to help them understand what to do in emergency situations. 

Through hands-on activities and role-play, our little learners were engaged, enthusiastic and able to practise important safety skills in a fun and supportive environment.

A huge thank you to St John Ambulance for taking the time to educate our Prep students and help them develop these important life skills!

What is an emergency?

• Matheo PD - When you have to go to First Aid.
• Thomas PC - When you ride your bike and you hurt your head.
• Gabriel PB- When someone is in danger.
• Nina PA- When someone gets hurt and you need to call an ambulance.

What do you do in an emergency?

• Awen PD - You squeeze their shoulders, to make sure they are ok.
• Clovis PD - You press a button (emergency) on the phone and press 000 and call.
• Lachlan PA - You can call triple zero.
• Marcel PB- You press 000 and go (green button).

Have you ever had an emergency before and who helped you?

• Olivia PD - One time I went to the pool with my Dad and my Mum and there was a big monkey bar and I fell down off it. The lifeguard helped me to fix my leg.
• Alex PC - When I was in kindergarten, some boys pushed me then I was not waking up. Then my friend helped me, then he asked a teacher to call 000. I went to the hospital.
• Luka PA - I went to the hospital when I broke my arm and the doctors helped my arm and I stayed overnight.
• Mabel PB- I fell on the floor one day. I hurt my leg. I was going to the hospital.

Principal’s Day! 🎉💐

Last Friday, CJC celebrated Principal’s Day, honouring our wonderful Leadership Team - Mr Chant, Mr Borg and Madame Pommier. They were showered with kind words, cards and heartfelt recognition for their guidance, support and passion for our students and the CJC community.

Our Prep students wanted to make the day extra special, so they secretly gathered the entire Prep cohort and made their way into the office to surprise the Leadership Team! To say they were pleasantly surprised would be an understatement!

The students presented them with cards and shared thoughtful words about what makes our leaders special, the important work they do for our students and how much they appreciate everything they do for our school. There were plenty of smiles, laughs and giggles along the way!

To finish the special surprise, the Prep cohort performed a song for our Leadership Team to express their gratitude:

“To all of you, To all of you, We wanted to say we love you. You always care, You always help, We wanted to say THANK YOU! Happy Principal’s Day!”

5/6 Digital Technologies 

Creating Solutions That Matter 🌏🤖

Last term, the Grade 5/6 students explored the UN Sustainable Development Goals and applied the Design Thinking process to create autonomous LEGO SPIKE Prime machines that tackle authentic global challenges. From research and prototyping to coding and testing, students finally showcased their innovation and learning through Google Sites while strengthening their problem-solving, collaboration and computational thinking skills.

Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP)

Congratulations to our Year 5 and 6 students who successfully completed the Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP) Mathematics course, Patterns: From Symbols to Secrets.

Throughout the program, students explored fascinating mathematical concepts beyond the primary curriculum, including number patterns, alternative numeral systems and cryptography. They were encouraged to think creatively, investigate multiple solution strategies, and view mathematics as a journey of exploration rather than simply finding the correct answer. By asking questions, testing ideas and making mathematical discoveries, our students demonstrated curiosity, perseverance and a genuine enthusiasm for learning.

We are incredibly proud of their commitment and the way they embraced the challenge. Well done to all our VHAP participants on this wonderful achievement!

Environment and STEM leaders

CJC’s Environment and STEM leaders participate in the Victorian Marine Ambassador Program. Each term, they attend a workshop with students from other schools, to learn about Melbourne’s marine environments. In Term 2, they learnt about several animals that call Port Phillip Bay home and practised sharing this information with younger students by showing images, acting like the animals, and participating in role plays. The students in 1/2A and 1/2B were delighted to welcome Liora, Neal, Idelle and Jake into their classrooms as guest science teachers, so they too could learn about our amazing marine creatures. They learnt about Port Jackson sharks, dolphins, Australian fur seals, sea stars, and decorator crabs. Our ambassador students did a fabulous job of conveying important information to our younger learners, and the Year 1/2 students thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Last week, our marine ambassadors attended their Term 3 workshop, which was unfortunately cut short due to a combination of poor weather and construction work occurring in the workshop location. However, they did observe that lots of litter had accumulated around the catchment area, and that definitely deserves a thumbs down. We can all help care for our marine environments, even if we are far from water, by making sure all rubbish is put in a bin.
