Over the last few weeks the Year 1 students have been exploring the 6 Rs of sustainability, which include Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot. We have focused on a different R each day, exploring what it means, what it looks like in action, exploring the perspectives of Indigenous Australians, and thinking about what it might look like in our school and in our homes.
This week we have reused some chopped up bamboo and turned it into insect hotels to hang around the school. We have also recycled the contents of our classroom scrap paper bins to make our own colourful paper. The students learned that to be sustainable we can only use materials that will rot into the ground when we are finished with them, so we made our own glitter out of different coloured scraps of paper, and made the paper coloured by only adding one colour of scrap paper into each tub. It has been really exciting and interesting to learn about how we can all look after our planet to make sure that these kiddos have a beautiful, healthy environment to grow up in, surrounded by an abundance of plants and animals.

Yesterday, 20 students from NLPS travelled to Kingsville Primary to take part in the first ever Kingsville Cup e-sports tournament. It was such an exciting day! We got to compete against 6 different schools and more than 150 students. We also met lots of new people and even made some new friends.
We had some awesome results too. Newport 67 won a gold medal in their pool and Newport 1 earned a bronze! We’re really proud of everyone who took part. We hope the tournament happens again next year because we’d love to go back!
