Introducing Our New Marking Scheme for 2026

Following extensive consultation with students, parents/carers and staff, we have carefully reviewed several options for updating our marking scheme, to better reflect a strengths-based approach to assessment. This shift moves away from a traditional deficit model-where the emphasis is on what students cannot do - and instead focuses on growth, progress and achievement. Our goal is to celebrate learning as a journey and to ensure that every student feels recognised for their development.

Assessment is more than a grade; it’s a reflection of learning progress. By adopting a strengths-based approach, we aim to provide feedback that empowers students, builds confidence and encourages continuous improvement. This philosophy aligns with our commitment to fostering resilience and a growth mindset across all year levels.

Based on feedback from students, parents/carers and staff, we will be implementing the Compass Performance Levels framework.

These descriptors align closely with our vision of recognising and celebrating student progress rather than simply measuring attainment.

The Compass framework offers clarity and consistency, making it easier for students and families to understand where learners are in their journey and what the next steps might be. It supports meaningful feedback and encourages a growth mindset, which is central to our teaching and learning philosophy.

This change represents more than a new marking scheme; it’s a commitment to improving student outcomes, by focusing on progress rather than deficits. By celebrating strengths and growth, we aim to create an environment where every learner feels supported, motivated and ready to succeed.
