Year 3 Learning This Week.
In Reading, learners are exploring how narratives work. They investigated the story arc, identifying the beginning, problems and solutions, and analysing how these parts help us understand the author’s message. We used Matilda as a mentor text, and learners examined how Roald Dahl introduces the characters, settings, creates problems, and leads the audience to a satisfying resolution.
In Writing, learners have been applying their understanding of the story arc to plan and draft their own narratives. They practised using sizzling starts, describing characters and settings, building tension, as well as pebble, rock and boulder problems. Then they began creating their action climax and character resolutions, creating a powerful and engaging ending for their stories.
In Mathematics, learners identified, compared and ordered everyday events from least to most likely. They explored probability vocabulary such as certain, likely, unlikely and impossible, and participated in simple chance experiments using dice. They learned how to record their results and compare similarities and differences in graphs.
In Inquiry, learners explored humanitarian aid and how people support communities affected by natural disasters. They investigated organisations such as the Red Cross, UNICEF, and the World Food Programme that provide food, shelter, and medicine. They then began forming their own campaign in groups to create initiatives to support people impacted by natural disasters.
