The Village

At Korumburra Secondary College, The Village helps us stay connected, reflect on what matters, and celebrate the positive things happening within our school community. As the year draws to a close, it’s a perfect time to pause and focus on one of our core values, We Are Kind.

Being Kind to Ourselves and Others

Kindness is more than being polite or helpful. It’s about the way we treat ourselves, the way we treat others, and the way we choose to see the world around us.

At this time of year, when things can feel busy, tiring, or a bit overwhelming, it’s important to remind students (and ourselves) that kindness starts with self-care. That might mean:

  • Recognising our own efforts

  • Speaking to ourselves with patience instead of pressure

  • Celebrating the things we’ve learned, not just the things we’ve achieved.

Being kind also means seeing the good in others. Our staff and students do incredible things, big and small, every day. They help a classmate quietly, encourage someone who’s stuck, include others in games or conversations, show resilience after a setback, or simply bring a sense of positivity to the room. These moments may not always make front-page news, but they’re the building blocks of our school culture.

Celebrating the Good Around Us

As we approach the end of the term, it’s a great opportunity for students to:

  •  Notice acts of kindness in their peers

  • Acknowledge someone who has helped or encouraged them

  • Share appreciation — through a message, a kind word, or even by nominating them for recognition

We’ll be encouraging our classes to reflect on the kind actions they’ve seen or experienced, and to recognise the ways we all contribute to making our school community stronger and more supportive.

Why It Matters

When young people learn to look for the good in themselves and others, it builds confidence, empathy, and stronger relationships. It helps create a culture where people feel safe, valued and respected — and that’s exactly the kind of community we want at Korumburra Secondary College.

Sometimes, kindness doesn’t have to be loud.It just has to be noticed.
