What we have been up to:

Students have taken a deep dive into the “improving” stage of the design process. They were given the design brief of ‘making a flying object made solely from paper and using any adhesive.’ They were asked to ‘improve’ their design and fill in a graphic organiser to help guide them through the changes they made to help it fly better. Students then got the chance to fly their plane outside. We have also had a couple of ‘flying machines’ arrive at school and students have been enjoying listening to the presentations and filling in the Flying Machines Data Sheet.

The data collected included:

  • What materials did they use?
  • How did you design the shape?
  • How did it go?
  • What went well?
  • What could you change?

Last week the Year 2 students had their second “practise for next year” transition session. Students had another opportunity to see their potential future classrooms and participate in future year level classroom routines.

Maths:

Students are loving exploring the maths topic of money and financial matters. We looked at real world money problems in preparation for our shops.

Getting your children to pay for things, count the coins in your purse and estimate or work out the change for any purchases, is a great way to support this unit at home. You may want to ask them what the best strategy for counting it is too:)

Classes have started a new unit on statistics and using data to visualise and wonder about the world around them. First, we explored interpreting data displays and reorganising the data to make comparisons and pose questions. Then we posed the question ‘How do you like to eat potatoes?’ and asked students to survey the class. They collected, organised and analysed the data.

English:

In writing this week we have started publishing some of our most prized texts in the preparation to share them with you. Students should have brought home their invitation to our writing celebration ‘Book Launch’. Keep your eyes peeled for the compass post.

Students have been excited to be nearing the end of all the Little Learners Love Literacy Stages 7.4 sounds. In the last two weeks we have focussed on the rules around adding suffixes  /ing/, /er/, /ed/ and /s/

What’s to come in the next two weeks:

Continuing to share students’ flying machines. Students will bring in their flying machines and present their design to the class. They can then take questions and comments, followed by a demonstration of how high/ far they can fly or how long they stay in the air when dropped from a height. The machines so far have been awesome and very exciting to share.

We will continue to focus on the final stage of the writer’s process, publishing in preparation.  Students will learn about the high expectations of a published piece of writing, having a ‘deadline’ and how they can ensure their published pieces are the best work that they can produce.

In our phonics sessions in week 10 and 11, we will finish Little Learners Love Literacy stage 7.4 with the final sounds /m/ (spelt /mb/), /r/ (spelt/wr/), /n/ (spelt /kn/) and /n/ (spelt /gn/) We will then review 7.4 sounds in our final week.

In Maths, we continue our unit exploring money- learning about purchasing and change and posing questions we are interested in surveying.

Don’t forget the Book Launch, put the date in your diary Friday 12th December at 3:00pm.
