Leadership at BBPS

Grade 5 Waste Warriors report, Tilly, Zoe and Harriet
The Grade 5 Waste Warriors recently went to Brighton Beach to pick up rubbish. We picked up 723 pieces of rubbish, and once we got back to school we sorted it all into 12 different categories: Recycling, Aluminium/Metal, Plastics, Small items.
Soon after, we did the same collection process in our own playground. We found 371 pieces and when sorting the items we noticed that most came from the canteen, with a large number of items being recycable bottles. We are interested in exploring this further and have been brainstorming possible actions to improve our disposal of plastics. Watch this space!
Please note: During each activity we wore gloves and used collection tongs.
Grade 5 Upstanders report, Millie, Liv, Vivi
A couple of weeks ago the Upstanders went to the Brighton Town Hall to learn more about preventing bullying in our school. We went along with our Upstander network schools and it was so fun. We learnt about the difference between bullying / being mean on purpose / and a friendship fire. We enjoyed learning about the 4Ds - four ways you can be an upstander - Delegate, Direct, Distract and Delay. (see diagram below, resource shared by guest presenter Dr Zach Greig, The Stand-Up Project)
This year, our major project with working with an Author in Residence and making a book about the theme 'Words are Muscles: Use them to Lift'. We are also planning ways we can help our community learning more about what we learnt at the forum. Watch this space!
Grade 6 Action Projects - well done to our first wave of leaders who have conducted their action projects across P-6.
Wilson Captains - P-1 Junior Sports Carnival - Izaiah reflecting on behalf of Izaiah, Bella and Everleigh
Our session was really good. All the students listened and were able to do the acitivies we planned. It was fun to teacher basketball, sprints and long jump. It was a success because we were really organised - we had our materials ready, a plan of how we were going to set it up, a point collection system, and everyone received a medal. We had fun, we hope the kids did too.
Performing Arts Captains - Gr 2 Confidence workshop - Flynn and Rose
Our workshop went through different activities that students can use to build confidence when in front of an audience. We had planned questions that helped them to tune it and showed us that our topic was really relevant. We taught brathing exercises and positive self-talk. We felt good afterwards, knowing we had helped students at BBPS.
Environmental Captains - Gr 3 Composting lesson - Jacob and Hugo
The Grade 3 students were excited to be a part of setting up compost bins across the school. They listened, occasionally, but we adapted our activities to respond to their behaviour. We had the resources organised and labelled which helped students know what to do. We were nervous at the start but felt good at the end. We were tired, grade 3 students can be a handful!
ICT Captains - Cybersafety in Grade 4 - Charli and Elliot
Our session was very successful. Students were interested and actually listened. Our activities were good, and they loved the Kahootz we made which assessed their learning and showed that they had listened to what we said. Having a reward system was a great way to make sure all the students behaved. We are really pleased with how it went.
