School Captains' Report

The past month has been a busy time for students at Nossal, with an abundance of events taking place! The week of 19-23 May was Nossal Week, which is an annual celebration of Nossal High School’s students and culture organised by the School Captains and the Student Representative Council (SRC).

The week was packed with student club events, stalls, Staff vs Students Competitions organised by the SRC and House Captains, as well as an assembly presented by the SRC. One of which was the short story competition run by Literature Circle Book club where students were asked to write on “experience at Nossal”.

Congratulations to the winners:

  • Jack Huang (Year 11)
  • Anojii Suthakaran (Year 10)

Monday 26 May marked the first digital delivery day of the year. Unique to Nossal, digital delivery days provide students with structured online learning experiences with the support of teachers to help build digital literacy skills and prepare students for the increasingly digital workforce and lifestyle in society. Students are not required to travel to school to participate but are required to attend classes online or complete tasks to check attendance. Digital delivery days can be run synchronously or asynchronously with synchronous days involving live calls and a classroom setting online and asynchronous days involving tasks set by teachers for students to work on at their own pace. While Monday 26 May was our first whole school synchronous delivery day, Tuesday 17 June will be the next opportunity for Year 9s and 10s to experience an asynchronous delivery day while Year 11s and 12s sit the VCAA GAT exam.

The SRC have continued to be busy this term with the organisation of Nossal High School’s participation in the 2025 Push Up Challenge, Australia’s Largest Physical and Mental Fitness Event, which helps to fund resources and raise awareness for physical and mental health. This fundraiser encourages participants to complete 3,214 push-ups from 4-26 June (or other forms of exercise) to represent the 3,214 lives lost to suicide in Australia in 2023, while donating money to support this great cause.

As in 2024, the Nossal SRC have taken the additional step of organising tutorial and cohort teams, to promote engagement and encourage friendly competition among the houses, all while supporting a good cause. This year is already turning out to be a massive success, with 280 students and staff taking on the challenge, and over $1100 dollars being raised so far, more than half of our fundraising goal of $2000. As a school community, we have completed over 125,000 push ups (or other forms of exercise) so far, which is currently the second highest in the entire State! Let's keep pushing Nossal!

On the Saturday 7 June, Wilbur and Sejal were invited by the Monash Interfaith Gathering (MIG) Committee to be panellists at their conference which on was the theme of “Raising Peaceful Next Generations.”

We were asked a range of complex and multifaceted questions by the audience including the following:

  • With so many great programmes and services available to the young people of Australia, why is youth crime and anti-social behaviour still on the rise?
  • If you could make one big change in schools or communities to create a more peaceful future, what would it be and why?
  • What message would you like to share with adults and leaders about raising a peaceful next generation?
  • What are some stressors that make it difficult for young people to stay mentally and emotionally balanced?

Our experiences over the last 4 years at Nossal proved invaluable as we attempted to provide insightful and nuanced responses to these thought-provoking questions. We’d like to say a big thank you to Ms Kamlavathi Reddy, who was kind enough to invite us to this conference, which was a great learning experience and provided us with a range of knowledge and perspectives on what is a pivotal topic going into the future. Ms Reddy was instrumental in the development of Nossal High School during its first years, especially with her work surrounding our Information Resource Centre (IRC), and we are extremely grateful for her continued involvement and support for the school post-retirement.

Furthermore, the Year 12 cohort was incredibly fortunate to have our formal take place on Friday 6 June. It was a night many of us had been looking forward to, and it lived up to the moment. Everyone looked great, and it was clear how much effort went into making the evening feel special. The venue, the atmosphere, and the chance to be together outside of school made it an event we will remember. After such a demanding term, it was the perfect opportunity to step back, enjoy ourselves, and take it all in.

We are especially thankful to the two performances on the night, which added something meaningful and personal to the experience. A huge thank you as well to the staff who attended and supported the evening, your presence meant a lot. We are grateful to everyone who arrived on time and helped make the night run smoothly as well as the formal committee for organising this wonderful evening. Overall, the formal was more than just a celebration, it was a chance to reflect, to connect, and to enjoy a well-earned break with the people we have shared this journey with.

Finally, as we approach the final weeks of Term 2, we encourage all students to ensure that they are giving themselves enough rest and downtime, to ensure that the rest of the term can be tackled with the same energy and enthusiasm! Not long to go until we all have our well-deserved break!
