What is the difference between learning Maths and learning Numeracy?
Mathematics and Numeracy are closely related, but they are not the same thing.
In essence, mathematics is the broader academic discipline with its own content strands, abstract concepts, and specialised ways of thinking, whereas numeracy refers to the practical, real-world use of number skills.
How is “learning Mathematics” different from “learning Numeracy”?
Learning Numeracy is the ability to interpret, use, and critically evaluate numerical information in everyday contexts. We learn numeracy when we are asked to read and interpret data (charts, graphs, tables). We learn numeracy when we ask students to make sense of proportions, percentages, measurement, money, and time in real situations.
How Mathematics and Numeracy complement each other?
Mathematics builds the underlying structure: logical reasoning, abstraction, proof, and general problem-solving strategies. Students who master mathematics are better prepared for STEM careers and higher education.

Topic: Fractions | Teach strategies: how to add/subtract/multiply/divide fractions. Prove why you invert & multiply when dividing. | Present a recipe: “The recipe calls for ¾ cup of sugar. If we want 1½ recipes, how much sugar do we need?” Emphasise reasoning, estimation, and practical measurement. |
