Miriam Suares-Jury, from the class of 2023, was recently featured in an article by World Lacrosse.
Below is a short excerpt from this article:
Miriam Suares-Jury made her debut at a World Lacrosse Championship in 2024 at the Women’s U20 Championship in Hong Kong, China in August.
She led Australia to a fourth place finish with an outstanding campaign in midfield, and was the only Australia athlete named to the World Team.
Suares-Jury scored 18 goals and added two assists, as well as eight ground balls, four caused turnovers and 27 collections of draw controls over the course of the championship. She was named the Most Valuable Player for Australia’s pool play contest against Italy, and also added two goals in a quarterfinal win over Wales.
In January of 2025, Suares-Jury suited up again for Australia at the Asia Pacific Women’s Lacrosse Championship in Queensland, where Australia claimed the silver medal on home soil and secured qualification for the 2026 World Lacrosse Women’s Championship in Tokyo, Japan.
Well done Mim!

Division Athletics Carnival
It was a spectacular day at the Collingwood Athletics Track, with blue skies and sunshine setting the perfect stage for this year’s Division Athletics Carnival. Melbourne Girls’ College proudly fielded a team of over 60 enthusiastic and talented students, competing against schools from the Inner North and Merribek Divisions.
Throughout the day, our students demonstrated not only their athletic prowess but also the values that lie at the heart of our school community; respect, determination, and leadership. From track sprints to field events, each participant gave their best and supported one another, creating a strong and inspiring team spirit.
MGC’s sporting diversity was on full display, with students competing, and excelling, across a wide range of events. We are proud to share that the majority of our competitors have qualified for the upcoming Regional Round, to be held in Term 3, a testament to their hard work, dedication, and commitment to sport.
A special thank you also goes to the student volunteers who assisted throughout the day. Your efforts behind the scenes helped ensure the event ran smoothly and your support did not go unnoticed.
The College extends heartfelt congratulations to every athlete and volunteer who represented us on the day. Whether competing, cheering, or helping out, you’ve made our community proud.

Netball and Soccer
Our Year 9 and 10 students proudly represented the school last week in both netball and soccer, displaying outstanding sportsmanship, skill, and teamwork throughout the day.
In netball, both our Competitive A and B Teams were dominant forces, battling hard through their pools and ultimately meeting each other in a thrilling all-school final. The match was fast-paced and fiercely contested, with the A Team narrowly edging out the B Team to take the win and progress to the next round. A fantastic effort from both squads, who showcased the depth of talent and determination within our netball program.
The soccer team also delivered an incredible performance, needing to score 13 goals in their pool stage to make the final...and they did just that! It was an exciting run of play that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. While they weren’t able to secure the win in the final, the effort and commitment from the entire team was nothing short of inspiring.
What stood out even more than the results, however, was the glowing feedback from staff and students of other schools. Our girls were praised for their respectful conduct, positive attitude, and leadership both on and off the field. They truly represented our school with pride.
Well done to all involved!

Badminton
The Year 9 and 10 competitive badminton team represented MGC at Brunswick Secondary College. The day got off to a fantastic start, with the MGC A, B, and C teams all winning their first-round matches. The B and C teams then faced off against each other, with the B team emerging victorious.
The A team advanced to the pool final, where they faced a strong University High A team. With both B and C teams rallying behind them, the A team received plenty of support and encouragement from the sidelines.
In the singles round, MGC secured 3 out of 4 wins, giving them an early lead. They followed up with a strong performance in doubles, winning 1 out of 2 matches. This gave MGC the edge, ultimately clinching the overall win with a final score of 4 games to 2 and a points total of 103 to 95.
The event ran smoothly throughout the day, and we’re thrilled to announce that the MGC A team has now progressed to the regional competition. Congratulations to all players for their effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship!

Year 10 SAMS: Auskick Umpiring at the MCG
Year 10 students from the SAMS elective class were recently given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent Melbourne College at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, umpiring Auskick games during halftime of two AFL matches.
The first group of ten students took to the field during the Richmond vs West Coast game, coinciding with the AFL Round for Mother’s Day. In a special all-girls umpiring round, our students proudly led young Auskickers onto the field, showcasing leadership, professionalism, and poise. With the sun shining and thousands in the crowd, the girls confidently officiated the match, making the most of their moment on the big stage. Behind the scenes, they were given exclusive access to the under-stadium areas and change rooms, adding to the thrill of the day.
The second group of students faced an entirely different challenge the following weekend, during the Collingwood vs Adelaide clash. Under blistering rain and freezing cold, the girls stepped up with resilience and determination. Despite the tough conditions, they returned from the field with wide smiles, buzzing from the incredible experience. Some of the students even had the special opportunity to form a guard of honour, high-fiving the Collingwood players as they returned to the field for the third quarter – a moment many described as unforgettable.
Both matches were tightly contested and provided a dynamic backdrop for the students to test their skills and composure. Whether under sunny skies or pouring rain, the Year 10 SAMS students represented the college with pride, embracing the experience with enthusiasm and maturity.
It was truly a privilege and an honour for our students to umpire at the MCG – a memory they’ll carry with them for years to come.
Well done to all involved!
