CHES Model UN

A few weeks ago, we had the incredible opportunity to attend a Model United Nations conference hosted by CHES. Model UN is an opportunity for students to learn about international relations, the UN system and important global issues, in an engaging, dynamic environment, while developing negotiation, conflict resolution and public speaking skills.
As delegates, we represented a country and debated the pressing issue of Protecting the World's Oceans, Seas, and Marine Resources. The day began with position statements, where delegates outlined their country’s stance on the topic. We then moved into both moderated and unmoderated caucuses, where we built alliances and gathered support for potential amendments to the draft resolution.
There were some heated diplomatic exchanges - especially between the USA and China - and a few pointed criticisms of countries whose past actions didn’t quite match their current positions. However, after lots of negotiation, the resolution was successfully passed.
Overall, the CHES Model UN was an amazing experience. It gave us a deeper insight into how the UN operates and allowed us to connect with other passionate students. I’d definitely recommend taking part in future Model UNs to anyone interested in politics, diplomacy, debating, or international affairs!
