School Zone Safety

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Brisbane City Council is writing to inform you that Ironside State School is confirmed to be included in the Brisbane City Council (Council) Safer Schools Program for Term 2, 2025. This program aims to promote safe parking practices and ensure compliance with local traffic regulations around schools.

Child safety is paramount, and illegal parking within school zones remains a significant concern for parents, residents, and schools. Limited parking spaces around peak drop-off and pick-up times often leads to competitive and potentially dangerous parking behaviours.

While we understand the challenges parents face in navigating school zone drop-off and pick-up, it is crucial to prioritise safety. Over the coming term, Council officers will be conducting regular patrols around your school to monitor parking compliance. Our enforcement approach will use a combination of foot patrols and our highly visible Community Safety and Regulation vehicles that can identify alleged offences using Automatic Number Plate Recognition and GPS software. Compliance action will be taken on any observed breaches.

School zone signs are displayed as you approach the school and shows both the speed limit and the times you need to reduce your speed around the school. Children's crossing are identified by children crossing flags, which are displayed near crossings before and after school hours.

When the crossing is supervised, you as a motorist must:

wait until all pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders have crossed the road and the crossing supervisor has returned to the footpath
abide by the direction given by the School Crossing Supervisor.

If the crossing is unsupervised, you as a motorist must:

give way to pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders on or entering a children’s, pedestrian or marked foot crossings
give way to pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders on or entering a road you’re turning into
give way to pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders on a slip lane
give way to pedestrians in a share zone
travel at a speed allowing you to stop safely at a crossing if needed

As a driver, it's important to make sure you give way to all pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders such as skateboards, e-scooters. You must also give way to pedestrians using a motorised mobility device such as a motorised wheelchair or a mobility scooter.

Some of our most vulnerable road users are children getting to and from school, so it’s important to slow down and abide by the crossing rules, as it won’t make much difference to the trip time, but it could very well save lives.

The Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in South Bank is seeking expressions of interest from teen performers to apply to perform at the Wonderstruck Festival at GOMA on Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 June.

WONDERSTRUCK FESTIVAL: TEEN PERFORMER CALL OUT

Are you a teen who is a passionate performer? Submit your expression of interest for the opportunity to perform at the Wonderstruck Festival!

All you need to do is submit a 1–3-minute audio recording or video of yourself performing to be in the running. Whether you sing, play an instrument solo or with a band, dance, or are a storyteller – we want to see your talent!

The most enthusiastic and passionate performers will be given the opportunity to perform a 15-minute set on the main stage at the Wonderstruck Festival, with staging and sound support supplied by QAGOMA.

Key dates

Fri 2 May 2025: Expressions of interest open
Fri 16 May 2025: Expressions of interest close at 11.59pm
By end of May 2025: All performers who have submitted an expression of interest will be notified of the outcome of their application, whether successful or unsuccessful
Sat 28 & Sun 29 June 2025: Wonderstruck Festival

To be eligible to perform, performers must be:

Between 13-17 years of age
Able to provide parental or guardian consent for participation
Available to perform a 15-minute set across the weekend of Saturday 28 June and Sunday 29 June at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA). Set times will be allocated once performers are selected
Able to ensure that their set is suitable for a daytime, all-ages audience, as it will be presented at a family-friendly festival

Saver Plus supports parents to save $50 per month for 10 months with online financial education workshops. The savings are then matched dollar-for-dollar, providing up to $500 extra for education-related costs*—potentially giving families $1,000 to help cover school camp fees.

Families can join anytime throughout the year and have funds ready to pay for camps or other education-related costs after completion of the program.

Eligibility criteria for parents include:

Holding a Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card

Ugly Gully is an orienteering club based in Brisbane and is hosting "Uncharted Paths: Connect & Explore through Orienteering", a one-of-a-kind event that brings together mothers, daughters, sisters, and best friends for a day of bonding, mindfulness, and adventure in nature.

The event is built to incentivize more women to exercise and also to introduce them to the world of orienteering while they are having a fun morning altogether.
