Hi everybody, it is getting chilly outside. We are at the start of Winter, can you believe how quick the year has gone! Remember we have the St Mary’s Beanies for sale now so go get yours on Fridays.
Last week we focused on Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day which is a very important part of Australian history. The theme for Reconciliation this year is called ‘Bridging Now to Next’ . What do you think that might mean?

We need to remember that when people are playing in the Zen Zone and when you are drawing on the papers, please do not throw the paper back in the box instead, take it home! The Zen Zone has hosted a few interesting events lately, colouring competitions for Bee Day and National Simultaneous Story Time.

This week, the Sustainability Leaders are bringing back Nude Food Day. Some of you might be wondering what is Nude Food Day? Every Friday students are encouraged to bring their snack and lunch in containers, reusable materials etc., so that we reduce the amount of rubbish produced from packaging. We are also hoping to bring back The Bin Challenge. The Bin Challenge is a challenge for every class to make sure you keep all the rubbish in the right bins. I know it sounds simple but be ready, because it’s going to be a challenge, A Bin Challenge!

Last week, Monday 26th, we started the Winter Drive, where we are asking for any donations of winter clothes, still in wearable condition, to be collected in your classroom in the designated boxes. We have already received some donations, but there is still plenty of time if you haven’t already donated, as the drive will end on the 27th June. For a friendly reminder people are allowed to donate old coats, jackets, blankets, beanies etc. We would also greatly appreciate any clothes hangers, or clothes racks, to be temporarily loaned to the school for storage of the clothes.
We have also been presenting some information about Saints at assembly. It is usually based on a Saint whose Feast Day occurred around about that time, so that the students, parents, and teachers can learn a bit more about them!
On Wednesday 28th of May we had a paraliturgy for Reconciliation Week, to remember what the Aboriginal people have been through and how much further there still is to go. It was great to see students from different Year levels read prayers and the choir singing some songs.

On Friday the 21st of May was National Simultaneous Storytime, on this day at 1st and 2nd break we had the Zen Zone open with a bookmark and a colouring page using the illustrations from the Truck Cat for students to do. Every student was assigned to a classroom to go and watch the live reading of the Truck Cat which was held at Springvale Library. It was super special as the person reading it was the author herself, Deborah Frenkel! At the end of the video every group did a different cat themed activity. We think that the 2025 National Simultaneous Storytime was a blast.

Last week we had a match with St James. Their school was a great place with nice people; they had two courts to play on and this time, they had three teams. They were all very talented and fun to play with, they were so nice to St. Mary's students. We all had a great time and scored a few goals for each team. We all played fair and square and we had no injuries. We can’t wait to meet them again in the Netball Lightning Premiership.
The AFL team played at Wattie Watson oval. We dropped the Netballers at St James, then picked up the St James AFL team. They didn’t have many players, so we gave them a few of our players. Both teams had a great time playing and we can’t wait to play them in the AFL Lightning Premiership on the 13th of June. Luckily someone from their school umpired our game and no one had any injuries.
Last week for Cross Country 4 students from our school represented the Holt District by running, at the Beachside Division Cross Country. The conditions were difficult as the track was wet and muddy, because of the rain. We wish them the best for their upcoming Cross Country Races in the coming years.
