KINDNESS from ‘Words Matter’
‘’Kindness’’ was revealed as Children's Word of the Year for 2024 by Oxford University Press last week.
Over 6,000 children aged 6 to 14 across the UK took part in the annual survey and were asked for their word of the year.
61% of children chose kindness, with many associating the word with mental health. One child said: “it’s always important to be kind as a lot of people struggle with their mental health” while another said kindness is important “as you don’t know who is suffering”.
Andrea Quincey, a director at Oxford University Press, said "It tells us that empathy and tolerance and the language we use matter, and that kindness is not only a solution to so many problems but is something everyone and anyone can do to make a difference."
Words matter. Let’s be kind and build children up, not knock them down.
Take care
