Reading

Over the last few weeks the 5/6 students have worked hard on developing positive Independent Reading behaviours. We have discussed the importance of ‘Real Reading’ and have spent time selecting texts to read from our classroom libraries. We have also begun our home reading program, where we have encouraged all students to take home texts to read as part of their homework.

Writing

In the 5/6 area we have been exploring persuasive texts. We have spent time discovering different persuasive texts in our world, such as advertisements, letters and newspaper articles and we have looked at the purpose and structure of this text type. Our students have worked hard both writing and analysing a variety of persuasive texts and have developed an understanding of many persuasive devices that we can use to further support our argument, such as a rhetorical question, emotive story, statistics, etc.

Maths

As the Grade 5s prepare for NAPLAN  we have spent the last few weeks revising mathematical topics such as transformation, shape and time. The students have worked on tasks such as creating 3D shapes, making timetables as well as plotting and identifying locations on a map. This revision has been fun, as it has involved many topics that are used in everyday life.  We have played games, such as bingo and Blooket which has enhanced our learning and provided an interactive way of revising these important topics.

SEL

In the 5/6 space we have focused our SEL on empathy. The students have engaged in discussions about the meaning of empathy and ways in which we can display empathy in our learning community.

We have just begun investigating our inquiry topic of Esmart. Esmart means being safe online. We have watched some news articles and read information reports about the dangers of the internet, including social media. We want all of our students to remain vigilant when using the internet, as their safety is most important.

Interschool Sports

Our Interschool Sports has begun. So far we have played an away game against Dallas Brooks Primary and one home game, where we hosted Coolaroo South Primary. Our students have worked extremely well together, displaying wonderful sportsmanship no matter if they have won or lost. We have had some success with our basketball and volleyball teams which is very exciting. We have another away game this Friday at Broadmeadows Valley where I’m sure our students will try their best, have fun and once again display our school values!

So many of our students continue to demonstrate our values of Kindness, Respect and Learning Together on a daily basis. We are so proud of all the students who continue to work hard to make our community a safe and secure place for learning. Below are our recipients this week, congratulations to all.
