This week’s focus is on composting. Did you know that every classroom at Monty P.S has a compost bin? Students are taught what can and can’t be composted and student compost monitors collect the compost daily and manage the making of the compost. Dry materials like cardboard and straw are added to the classroom scraps as well as some water. It is then stirred well to ensure the compost breaks down perfectly. We then put this soil back into the garden! This is great because we divert a lot of waste materials from landfill as well as saving money from not having to buy compost.

Students in Grades 4 and 5 had a go at finding compostable materials around the school and adding it to our compost bins. They found weeds, dry leaves, shredded paper and cardboard - the worms are going to love it!
