SPOTLIGHT

Spotlight -Year 1
What an amazing start we have had to Year 1 this year! The students are enjoying their new classrooms and getting to know all of their classmates.
This week, our Year 1 students arrived to find the super villain, Evil Pea had captured all the veggies in the Hive! Where is the superhero, Supertata when you need him? We showcased our writing skills by creating some wanted posters to try and capture Evil Pea… Please keep your eye out for him! What amazing imagination skills our Year 1 students have. We cannot wait to see how they develop their writing skills throughout the year.
Year 1 happily put on their mathematician hats and used their knowledge of 2D Shapes and their properties to explain where we can find 2D shapes in the world around us, and how we can identify them by both their sides and vertices. We are currently exploring whole numbers and their place value. Did you hear about our visit from Flossy the Number Fairy? She came to help us remember the importance of knowing and learning about numbers.
Last Friday, the Year 1 students enjoyed a fun-filled athletics sport session run by Mr Jay Stone. We spent time learning about ‘zombie arms and dead turtles’... the first 4 levels required to be proficient at high jump. The children thought it was wonderful to be able to learn a new skill and cannot wait for the next session.
We are looking forward to having fun in Year 1 this year! Please enjoy some of the images we have attached.
Spotlight -Swimming Carnival
What a fabulous day was had by all at the carnival on Friday. Congratulations to our winners Edmund Rice.
Marvellous Mathematicians
The year at Saint Nicholas Primary School has begun with an exciting and engaging start in Mathematics across all year levels. Our youngest learners in Kindergarten, Year 1, and Year 2 have been exploring the world of 2D shapes, identifying circles, squares, triangles, and more in their everyday environments. Through hands-on activities and interactive lessons, they have not only learned to name and describe objects but have also started recognizing their properties, laying a strong foundation for future mathematical concepts.
In Years 3 and 4, students have been thoroughly enjoying their unit on position, developing their understanding of direction, movement, and mapping. Engaging tasks, including grid-based games and real-world applications, have helped them build confidence in using positional language and coordinates. These activities have encouraged teamwork and problem-solving, making learning both meaningful and fun.
Meanwhile, our senior students in Years 5 and 6 have been exploring the fascinating world of 3D objects. They have investigated the properties of prisms, pyramids, and other three-dimensional objects, using hands-on activities to deepen their understanding. Importantly, across all grades, students have been developing the mindset that they are all mathematicians. By fostering curiosity, resilience, and a positive attitude toward learning, we are empowering every child to see themselves as capable problem-solvers who can apply mathematical thinking in everyday life.
The following images have been taken in a range of grades to show the students' maths walls. Research strongly supports the use of classroom wall resources that have been co-constructed and deconstructed with students, as it fosters greater ownership of their learning. When students actively participate in creating visual supports, such as anchor charts and word walls, they develop a deeper understanding of concepts and feel a stronger connection to their learning environment. This process encourages engagement, reinforces key ideas, and promotes independence, as students are more likely to refer to and use these resources meaningfully in their learning.
