Foundation Excursion to Highbury Park

On Wednesday the 12th March, the Foundation students went on their very first excursion. Teachers and students walked from school to Highbury Park to meet with Tina from Whitehorse City Council. Students engaged in a range of activities to deep-dive into how they can also be ‘Eco-Warriors’ in our local community, such as making sure rubbish goes in the bins provided with the lid closed to keep the wildlife safe, how important the insects are to the natural environment, and who is responsible for keeping the parks clean, safe and healthy for everyone.

When we first arrived, the students were amazed to see a ring-tailed possum drinking on the oval. Tina explained to the students that due to the lack of rain, the possum was using its natural environment to survive. Next, the students contributed to the clean up of the park, ensuring that all rubbish is placed in the correct bin.

The Foundations were lucky enough to go exploring with microscopes to see the different insects that live in the bush, and they found cicada shells, ants, beetles and other interesting bugs.

As we said our goodbyes and thank-you to Tina, she gave each of the classes a set of posters that further explained the animals that live in the park. These are on display in the classrooms.
