Year 5 - Mathematics

This term, our Year 5 students have been building their confidence with decimals and fractions. We started by learning how to add and subtract decimals, focusing on lining up the decimal point correctly to ensure accurate calculations, ensuring we work with the number in the right hand column first.

We explored this concept through money and also applied it practically by recording lap times and adding them up in a group scenario.

Students then explored place value beyond the decimal, understanding how tenths, hundredths and thousandths work. They applied this knowledge to convert decimals into fractions, strengthening their number sense and problem-solving skills.

Students have been exploring multiplication strategies such as the split method, area models and lattice multiplication. They solved real-world problems and practised balancing equations. Through hands-on activities, they developed problem-solving skills and mathematical reasoning.
