Year 2 - Earth's Treasures

Earth’s Treasures Incursion
On Monday the 17th of March, the Year 2 students were excited to take part in the Earth’s Treasures incursion, which helped us explore our Inquiry question: 'How can we make a positive change to our environment?'
We discovered that the world around us is filled with treasures—not the kind pirates search for, but natural resources that come from the Earth.
First, we sorted various materials into five different categories based on where they come from.
We learned that:
• Paper and cardboard come from trees
• Glass is made from sand
• Plastic is produced from oil
• Aluminium is extracted from bauxite ore
• Steel is made from iron clumps
Then, we raced in an exciting relay to correctly place household items into the right bins—General Waste, FOGO, or Recycling. It was a fun and fast way to learn about proper waste disposal. One of the most surprising facts we learnt was that glass can take up to one million years to decompose!
Finally, we got to meet some incredible little creatures—earthworms! We discovered that worms play a vital role in improving soil health. One fascinating fact was that baby earthworms hatch from a saddle-like cocoon in the soil. We also learnt about worm tea, a natural liquid fertilizer that helps plants grow.
The Earth’s Treasures incursion was an eye-opening experience. It taught us the importance of looking after our planet and how small changes—like recycling and composting—can make a big difference.
Henry 2SL - "I liked sorting the rubbish in different hula hoops. I learnt where different materials come from."
Buena 2A - "I liked playing with the worms because they are wiggly and fun. I learnt that worms have no gender and their saddles can release hundreds of baby worms."
Zac 2Y - "I liked seeing the slimy earthworms. I learnt that worm tea needs to be mixed with water and is good for plants in the garden."
Riya 2SL - "I liked doing the relay races. I learnt which types of rubbish goes in which bin."
Aozhi 2Y - "I liked watching the worms crawl around. I learnt that the worm’s saddle can come off their body."
Anika 2A - "I like doing the relay race."
