Year 9 Feature

It has been a busy and productive start to the year for Year 9! They have settled well into their new classes, getting to know their new teachers and establishing working relationships with peers they haven’t worked with before. A highlight for year 9 has been their electives as, for the first time in their schooling they were able to choose two of their subjects. Our Year 9 students are engaged in a wide range of electives including: Textiles, Food Technology, iStem, Design and Technology, Elective History, Commerce, PASS, Visual Arts, Music and Dance. We look forward to hearing about all the new things they will learn about.

Year 9 stepped up this year as they came up with ideas for their Project Compassion stalls which were held on Caroline Chisholm Day. 9 Gilmore brought in and sold over 550 zooper doopers, 9 Jackson and MacKillop joined forces and ran a Paint and Sip stall with snacks, 9 Kenny ran their famous Chocolate Wheel, 9 Macarthur held a cake and lolly stall and 9 Wright ran Putt Putt. All homerooms worked together really well and helped to make a significant contribution to our Project Compassion fundraising. When they weren’t working at their stalls, our Year 9 students had a wonderful day on the rides and visiting other stalls and activities.

We had two wonderful Year 9 students participate in the CSDA Public Speaking Competition. Ainsley (9 Wright) and Alyssa (9 Jackson) represented the College as they competed against other year 9 students from Catholic schools across Sydney. Alyssa has been successful in progressing through the first two rounds, and to the Grand Final to be held this Friday night. Congratulations to both girls and we wish Alyssa the very best for the Grand Final!

Our Year 9 students have been busy in the sporting arena as well! This term has seen our students participate in an interest sport selection here at school. These include: Ag Club, Cheerleading, Drama Club, Cooking Club, Textiles Club, Wellbeing/Mindfulness, Art Club and Music Club. We have also had a number of students represent the College in volleyball and oz-tag. Trials are coming up for netball and soccer and I am sure a number of Year 9 students will trial and go on to represent the college. Next term, Year 9 will do venue sport, where they will rotate between Flipout, TruNinja, PCYC, lawn bowls, rock climbing and bowling. Year 9 were well represented at the College Swimming Carnival where our house colours were clearly on display. Special congratulations to Sienna (9 Gilmore) who progressed to the PDSSSC carnival where she placed 1st in the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 2nd in the 50m backstroke. Congratulations to the Year 9 girls who ran in our Cross Country at school with Maddox (9 MacKillop) placing 1st, Siena (9 MacKillop) placing 2nd and Mikayla (9 MacKillop) placing 3rd in the 15 year division!

Next Friday 21st March, our Year 9 students will engage in an Elevate Study Skills workshop which will focus on improving their time management skills. This will be helpful in providing strategies for managing their time between their school work and family and sporting commitments.
