Performing Arts -

Ms Stanton

Howdy all,

The term may be coming to a close, but the young performers at Trinity Primary are still putting their utmost talent and effort into their creative expression. In Prep, students have been engaging in a variety of ensemble activities to practise and build on the personal and social skills that encourage successful teamwork. Recently, while exploring the different ways that we can transform into a creature or character, students created tableaus (freeze frames) to show their transformations into familiar characters.

In Year 1/2 students have been involved in different improvisation games and activities to imagine and build a role and create a situation that the character could find themselves in. Over this term, they have been guided through a process drama called “A Walk in the Woods” in which a child becomes lost in the woods and a wolf in disguise emerges to help (or not). Students have created soundscapes, walked through the imaginary forested space, and taken turns as both the child and the wolf. Most recently, students have watched their latest improvisation and provided feedback for themselves and identified what they enjoyed in others’ performances.

In Year 3/4, students are exploring the wonderful world of puppetry, experimenting with sock puppets, finger puppets, and hand puppets. After practising changing their voices to match the appearance of a puppet and building on this by improvising scenes, students have been working in small groups to plan a scene utilising provided hand puppets. Their plans include arranging their own sound effects that reflect their chosen setting, writing lines that each performer will say, and having a connected narrative structure.

In Year 5/6 students have been analysing a scripted scene and finding two ways to present it. As a starting point, students expressed wonderings after listening to Clint Mansell’s “Lux Aeterna” and James Brown’s “I Feel Good”. Students then worked with their scene partners to plan and rehearse two versions of their scripted scene, each one set to either song. Using the mood and atmosphere created by each song, scene partners determined the best storylines, actions and reactions that would fit each context – all without changing the words in the scene. Currently students are in the filming process, performing their pieces (to be edited with music) and giving feedback to their peers.

The performers who have dedicated their time to drama club have also been busy! In 3/4 Drama Club, students have been working on a short film, which looks at community, respect, excellence and ZOMBIES! In 5/6 Drama Club students have elected to work on a live performance and have begun rehearsals to bring to life the first scene of the play “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.

Let’s keep making magic,
